ellitor 32,148
in his last year in AU From his Wiki page In 1998. Bowden's fate at Auburn changed as he faced criticism for recruiting woes, off-the-field issues that resulted in player discipline, and in his relationships with Auburn administrators, including board of trustees member Bobby Lowder. These issues, combined with a string of player injuries, lead to a disastrous start of the 1998 season. After starting with a 1–5 record, Bowden resigned as head coach the night before Auburn played against Louisiana Tech.[4] In conversations with athletic director David Housel, Bowden was given no assurances he would have a chance to remedy the situation for the next season, and that he believed his termination was imminent.[5] The team was coached for the remainder of the season by Bill Oliver. I just love it when fans keep the faith, believe in their AU Tigers and expect the team to find a way to get better and win. BTW, there is no question that Terry Bowden resigned. He almost surely would have been fired after the season -- as much or more for what was happening with recruiting as for the record to that point in 1998 -- but it was his choice to walk when he did. That's not disputed by anyone.

The problem is, I haven't seen anything from this team that leads me to believe they can compete in the SEC... this year! edited to remove the double quote. Not sure why or how you are doing that
CleCoTiger 1,957
I haven't seen anything from this team that leads me to believe they can compete in the SEC... this year! Did you watch the Arkansas game? The defense played pretty well for the most part after the first few Arky drives and held on until they wore down late. The offense was able to move the ball -- go back and read StatTiger's postgame analysis -- but just kept shooting itself in the foot with sacks, overthrows on open routes and so on. Now we have the head coach saying pretty much explicitly that he's going to tell his offensive coordinator what the team's offensive identity is going to be, and that they are going to narrow the focus instead of just "skipping around" all over the place with no real rhyme or reason. You go ahead and give up on this team if you want. I see too much talent and too much potential. I saw a team that without the offensive mistakes whips Arkansas pretty handily. I think they get it fixed, and I think it starts this week.
TigerVII 81
I think technically that Bowden won one game in 1998 (before he resigned and Oliver took over). The irony is that the only team Bowden beat (and the only SEC win that AU enjoyed) in 1998 was against Ole Miss, whose head coach (Tuberville) became our head coach in 1999. I think (for the most part) Tuberville did a good job while he was at AU, but I've always chuckled that we hired the only SEC coach that we could beat in 1998 to become our head coach. AU-24 3,060
Some of you remind me of the "Battered Wife Syndrome". An abusive husband will do one or two positive things to go along with all the abuse and the wife focuses on the two positives; so she stays with him and claims everything is OK. At this point the most loyal thing we can do is insist this gets fixed or find someone else that can fix it! We are not Temple, Vandy, Kentucky, or Ole Miss. We Are Auburn, and We Are All In! Get on board sunshine pumpers and let’s demand to get some results!
aucanucktiger 1,705
Terry Bowden quiting his team to go sit on daddy's porch half way through the season is still one of the most childishly irresponsible things I've ever heard a coach doing. It's not like he left to accept a better job waiting for him, he didn't leave because of "health reasons", etc. He just left. It's odd IMO that the AU administration giving TB a heads up mid season so he could look elsewhere and maybe land on his feet is looked at by some as good reason for him to just drop everything mid season and leave. Nobody played with him so he took his ball and went home. fwiw and IMHO Chizik is half as good as TB on game day but worlds better in recruiting & public relations and a bit better in staff assembling.
