CBVG on the process of building the D

This may not appeal to everyone who thinks everyone associated with Auburn athletics needs to be fired; but CBVG says some things here that make a lot of sense to me.

"Our goal is to become the best in the country on defense,” VanGorder said after Saturday’s 41-20 defeat, the first time the Tigers allowed 30-plus points under his tutelage. “I know it’s a process. But we’re getting ourselves ready to play in big games in the future, and what we do right now is vitally important – it is key what we do right now in building it. We’re evaluating to see if we’re right to make that chase and pursue that, but that’s the mission."

"There’s going to be some bumps, and obviously, we’re enduring that right now,” VanGorder continued. “But again, I’m more interested in getting better and making sure that our culture is one to play championship football in the future.”

Whatever is happening now -- and no one thinks we are playing well -- we have to use it to get better. And this has to be the message of the coaches.

Did you see what Tubbs did today with his 2 and 3 star players?

No I don't want Tubbs back but he upset Oklahoma #5 last year, #5 West V. this year. Do you see what LSU's two freshmen O linemen are doing against SC? I am so tired of this youth and future crap!

So we are playing and preparing for the future isn't that sweet. We have more talent than any team we played this year except LSU! Our coaches should be concerned about their jobs today and how they will beat Vandy next week, instead they are preparing for the future with job security at 1-5!

I would rather see BVG at HC than give CGC another chance.

Agreed. He is a keeper, and could be at least the interim coach

I can't remember ever calling for any coach to be fired at Auburn (although I noted how out of place Roof was) but ya'll are cracked if you think Van Gorder is heading in the right direction.

He has our players tackling for the first time under CGC and hasn't even been here a year yet. BVG may or may not be a good HC but we know what we got with CGC at the helm. I'll gladly take the gamble.

I tend to agree, and then there is CSL, now there is a real winner......

Guys we are looking at a 2-10 season here. Young, rebuilding, new coordinators. These are all excuses to struggle but to be 2-10 and get blown out by teams like Arkansas and Ol Miss is unnacceptable

We are 4 years into this and have recruited well the last 3 years. 8 wins should be a disappointing season at this point.

We are an SEC bottom feeder right now and all I can do is thank God I'm in Chicago where they are still laughing at us just not as hard as most of you have to hear.

This year's signature win will be La Monroe. (Let that sink in) in Overtime. I've defended the man till the bitter end and believe me that's where we are. THIS TEAM IS COMPLETELY LOST.

2 recruits started today from Leroy high school. Those of you from South Alabama know how ridiculous that is. No one in the SEC recruits Leroy (accept Auburn) even though they are the very class of 2a excellence.

I hate to be this negative because I know there are people who still have hope but if you can't see how out of it we are than you are delusional.

It's way more than the score. Look at the sideline, listen to the comments. Derek Dooly has more control over his team.

More from Van Gorder:

Upon referring to the future, VanGorder made it clear this wasn’t necessarily a "wait ‘til next year’ concession.

"I don’t think that we can use the word patience in our room. I don’t think the Auburn people would agree with patience. That’s not our business," VanGorder said. "We’re trying to speed the process up, and that requires a sense of urgency from all of us."

Halfway through this wayward season, Auburn opponents are averaging 416.7 yards per game. If sustained, the Tigers would reset last year’s worst single-season defense (408.0 yards) in school history.

"You get what you earn in this business," VanGorder said. "We’ve got to get better, we’ve got to coach better, players have got to play better. We keep saying that. And we’re at the ground level trying to build our house and it’s going to take a lot of work, as I’ve been saying."

I hope that Van Gorder is back next season to see this through. This season has been painful to watch on both sides of the ball. Certainly no one is happy about the way things have gone, and yeah, a lot of folks want to fire everyone. I'm not there yet. I'm not sure where I am after today, but I can't help but think that most of this staff* has earned (prior to this season...they haven't earned squat this season) the right to have a chance to turn it around.

*CSL excepted, at least for me.

I support VanGorder and Jay Boulware. Every other coach should be standing in the unemployment line.

You want people who have been making that much money to go stand in the unemployment line? :P

Should be taken "rhetorically".. :)

I really like CBVG's fire and enthusiasm, but he seems out of touch with the college game. It's changed a lot since his tenure at Georgia.

The color guys on radio (I watch TV and listen to Auburn radio) were talking about how we were letting OM's backs get to the sideline on the sweeps and blaming the DE's for poor run contain. Quentin Riggins found out on the sideline that the DE's were assigned to crash the QB and the lb's had sideline responsibility. I don't think we have a linebacker fast enough for sideline responsibility.

I'm not pretending to be a coach, but just repeating what was said on radio. They praised BVG when he brought in Erique Florence on the fourth down because OM was trying to take advantage of the lb mismatch again and EF (not a true lb) had the speed to cover the ground.

Listening to the guys on the radio I think I better understand some of Jake Holland's problems and why we can play with LSU, but not spread teams. BVG needs to rethink some of his schemes to defend a speed game.

No, I don't think BVG is a good candidate to be head coach.

This is the first game we have done the LB and DE switching. That tells me that BVG is trying to come up with something to combat these high powered offenses. Which also coincides with his quotes. The first time I noticed we were doing it was late in the game when their QB stepped up in what would have normally been a pocket and was meet by CL. I think the next play was the Richardson sack. So I have to give it to BVG he is trying to figure out ways to put his players in the best position to win.

Truly is a Tony Franklin situation of both sides of the ball. The talent may there, but we dont have philosophical agreements with position coaches. I personally don't like the thought of drastic change. I would give CGC Another year. If CSL is staying, allow him to evaluate his position coaches and make any corrections needed. If we are keeping all our O staff besides CSL, then promote CCL to OC. On defense, allow CBVG the opportunity to evaluate his position coaches and make any changes he sees fit. We have to allow the guys running the show to do it their way. Right now I feel they are handcuffed.

BVG is a proven coach. He knows our weaknesses and he is trying to sort it out. He has 1 LBer that is SEC quality. Let that sink in. I want to see Frost out there as much as anyone. Patience is not something we fans are known for. I saw 2 true freshman playing corner and I thought they played decent for freshman. We must have a DL that is disruptive and I have only seen that against LSU. Our LBers are what they are, not very good. BVG doesn't have a wealth of talent. The best talent over the last 2 years has been on the offensive side of the ball. Our DL should be playing more aggressive but for whatever reason they are not. I saw a lot of corner and safety blitzes yesterday because our LBers cannot get to the QB save Richardson one time and Bates one time. Until we get more push from our DLs and better LBers, we are going to struggle.

It seem BVG has problem handle spread offense especially No Huddle Offense which all experts on this forum hates. Several times yesterday, our players still try to get signal from the sideline when Ole Sis snap the ball....He need to get handle Spread better...there are a lot of teams run spread not everyone run Super slow pro style offense like corndog and Bammer.

I lost confidence in VanGorder, while he seems content with our middle linebacker play. I would be giving anyone a shot that WANTED to play. What does he have to lose ?

I love Coach BVG and would love to see what his defense would look like with a legitimate set of linebackers. There is just no way to stop a spread offense if the linebackers can't pick up the receivers and cover them. The receivers outnumber the coverage if the linebackers can't do their part. And ours couldn't cover a slice of bread with a jar of mayonaisse.

Unfortunately, if we go the new head coach route (which I think we should), that head coach is probably going to want his own people. And if we make BVG the head coach, what's to stop him from becoming an Administrator instead of a working coach, much like CGC has become. As bad as I loathe the man, Satan (I mean Saban) is always on the field teaching fundamentals to his kids. I haven't seen anything that CGC has taught our guys. We are so undisciplined on both sides of the ball. And off the field as well.

I don't have any answers either other than to tear everything down and rebuild. But if we don't get a big name coach, all of those multi-star recruits are gone. Don't know who that would be, but AU probably won't go that route anyway...look at our past hiring history. I just know that if we hire that slime-bucket Petrino...well, I hope we have better sense than that.
