Coaching percentages in the SEC and what they mean.

I read the "Coaches can't be friends with players" post and I totally agree with it. Then I had an epiphany. Like with many of my posts, please read with an open mind.

Let's look at the winning percentage of all current SEC coaches. Included in this winning percentage is their total percentage as a head coach no matter where that job was or is, so Chizik's will include Iowa State and Dooley's will include La Tech, etc. I also included Bobby Petrino, Houston Nutt, and Urban Meyer since they have only been out of the conference for a short amount of time. Listed in order...

Urban Meyer 83%

Hugh Freeze 77%

Nick Saban, Mark Richt, and Bobby Petrino 74%

Steve Spurrier and Les Miles 73%

Kevin Sumlin 69%

Will Muschamp 68%

Gary Pinkel 63% (this is sure to drop)

Dan Mullen 61%

Houston Nutt 58%

Gene Chizik 51%

Derek Dooley 46%

James Franklin 44%

Joker Phillips 39%

John L. Smith- doesn't count

This is hard, scientific evidence that Gene Chizik is not that good of a coach. Houston Nutt has a better record. If we pretend that 2010 never happend, he'd have a winning percentage of 31%. That's DEAD LAST. I don't know about you, but Auburn deserves better than a coach who barely wins half of the time and many of those wins being on a wing and a prayer.

I have no idea if Hugh Freeze is a jerk or not but Urban Meyer can be. And look at most of the other names near the top of the list: Saban, Petrino, Miles, Spurrier. With the exception of Richt, they are all HUGE JERKS. I think this data shows that being a nice guy (Chizik, Dooley, Phillips, Nutt, etc.) doesn't win games.

Discuss.

I'm not talking about being players coaches or not. The main thing I wanted to share was the cold hard evidence that gene chizik is an average coach at best.

First I took care of your double post. Secondly, numbers/statistics can be skewed to show most any view point. Winning percentage isn't the only thing that needs to be considered when making an absolute statement like you have above. To blindly point to only winning percentage to prove a point is pretty shallow.

I am not going to take the time to find this data, but I know player discipline off the field has seemed like a consistent issue over the past 4 years as well. I know all coaches go through this, but it is no surprise that Auburn currently holds the record in the Fulmer Cup.

I would be curious as to SEC ranks for discipline, if someone is feeling research-y.

Great point. I'm sure there are lots of things that are a better show of how good a head coach is. Like.... Or.... How about...?

Nope. That's it. It's about wins and losses.

I can agree to a point, but isn't wins vs losses THE most important stat there is when it comes to measuring a coach?
