The word on the street around here is that Spuriier is gonna come coach the Lamecocks, and that the membership to Augusta National sealed the deal, just like it did with Lou.

On the other hand, everyone could just be wrong about the whole thing.

Augusta National would have a huge impact on anyone who golfs seriously - I know it would for me ;)

I dont see him going to USC.......It just doesnt fit and the Augusta deal is bogus...Dont you think with the pull and connections Spurrier has, he could get a membership on his own...I doubt it happens........BUT......he could just be wanting to get back in the SEC East to show Foley and the UF Prez. up.

Lou Holtz was not able to get a membership at Augusta until he bacame coach at USC. The man that runs AN is an SC grad named Hootie Ingram. Yes, he calls himself Hootie (it ain't got nothing to do with Blowfish.)

I would agree that you would THINK that these guys could get a membership on their own merits, but it's not the case. Apparently Augusta National is REALLY exclusive.

Who would have think it?

Now I'm not saying that Spurrier is definitely going to end up at USC, but I promise that this Augusta National thing is really a factor.

Sorry, but a membership at Augusta National is the ONLY good thing that you could get going to COLUMBIA, SC to coach the :usc: . Columbia is NOT an attractive city, nothing there. I feel sorry for Spurrier if he goes there. Nah..... might be fun to have him closer to hear about his viser throwing antics!

I know this isn't a golf webboard so I'll hold my surprise back...

Augusta National has fewer than 100 members. In the recent past, they have turned away the Busch family (of beer fame), Bill Gates, and the Waltons (of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club). They are old Southern money and maintain the greatest golf course on earth. They don't let in just anyone.

From what I understand, members are only allowed to play a dozen times a year. They severly limit the play on the course to keep it in the shape it's in. The course is closed sometime in January and not reopened until sometime in May.

I'm very surprised to hear that they would give Lou Holtz a membership...I guess the South Carolina ties have a great deal to do with it. I would be VERY surprised if they started giving memberships to whatever USC coaches came and went, Spurrier or not.

And if any of you reading this are members at Augusta National, go ahead and let me know. I'm available to play 24/7!

WDE :au:

Hey. It's hard to concentrate while you're supposed to be working. My bad. Sue me. To Hell with Lou Holtz anyway.

As an update, he sais in hid post-practive press conference today at 6:30 that he did NOT inform his staff that he was retiring. So he's flat out denying these rumors today. We'll see what happens.
