Two handguns and permits were stolen from a New City, N.Y. home listed by the Journal News Wednesday night, theWestchester/Rockland Newsday reported Thursday.

Thieves broke into the home, stealing a safe that contained the guns, authorities said. The home was ransacked and two other safes were broken into, the report said.

Police officials said there was no evidence at this time indicating the interactive map published by the Journal News played a role in the burglary.

"The burglary is still under investigation and there are no facts to support this correlation at this time," said Clarkstown Sgt. Joanne Fratianni. "If the investigation develops further information, it will be released accordingly."

Newsday said that a .45 caliber Colt revolver and a .22 caliber Iver Johnson. Cash was stolen, along with U.S. Savings Bonds and jewelry.

Clarkstown Det. Lt. Charles Delo told News12 that he believes the burglary was random and "the home was not targeted."

"The burglary comes less than a week after a White Plains homeowner who, too, was listed on the Journal News website as having gun permits, arrived home to find his home burglarized with jewelry missing and an attempted break-in of his gun safe. The thieves were not successful and no guns were stolen," Timothy O'Connor wrote.

The Journal News came under intense fire after publishing an interactive map showing the names and addresses of those with legal handgun permits in two New York counties.

The paper intended to publish the names and addresses of gun permit holders in a third county, but Putnam County officials have refused to comply with the paper's Freedom of Information Act.

So far, Newsday said, the family has declined to comment on the burglary.

I thought thieves wouldn't break into a home that they knew had guns? Darn thieves and their disregard for logic...

Notice they broke in when they knew or at least believed no one was home. Better a burglary than a home invasion.

That said, it just goes to illustrate how irresponsible publishing a list like this really was.

That never was the reasoning. The reasoning was: If some a**hole breaks into my home, I'll be equipped with more than hugs and well wishes with which to defend myself and my family.

The paper can't report it anymore, but the damage is done. NY made it illegal to report the legal owners of guns.

of course the police can only have 7 rounds in their clips to go after the burglars...........
