My top 5:

1. Earthquake Game

2. 2002 UGA Greene to Johnson

3. 2005 LSU 5 missed FGs

4. 2007 LSU Byrd makes one handed catch with 0:01

HM: I'm too young to have it in my top 5 but I'll say the Run in the Mud

The earthquake game. To this day, that may have been the best defensive team I've ever seen in orange and blue. We dominated that game for all but the last 2 minutes.

Over 40 years ago, but I nominate the 1971 Iron Bowl. Both teams enter the game with perfect records, Sullivan had just received the Heisman Trophy the week before, and we had just beaten Georgia, another undefeated team: We lose embarrassingly, 31-7, as Johnny Musso runs all over us. :puke:

I would have to include the Van Tiffen FG sailing through the uprights as time ticked off in the 84 Iron Bowl. I would also have to include the Florida loss when Auburn led 17-0 at the beginning of the 4th quarter when Kerwin Bell came off the bench to win that one 18-17 with a 2 point conversion with less than 30 seconds to play

Don't forget the Gossom incident

A win would've given us 4 straight SEC championships and a Sugar bid

I agree 84 Iron Bowl would have to be in the top 5.

Earthquake game would be number one on my list. That teamwould have played for, and probably won, the 88 national title. I was at the 2002 Georgia game, and that was definitely a heartbreaker. What about the 2009 Iron Bowl? A win there probably knocks the turds out of the BCS championship game. I also throw the 97 SEC Championship loss to Tennessee into at leadtbthe honorable mention category. Tubby's first Iron Bowl in 99 was also a heartbreaker to me. They were far less talented than Bama. They were driving to go up 21-6 on the first possession of the 2nd half. Had they scored it probably would have broken Bama's back yet they stalled, missed a field goal, and the rest is history. I could sit here and think of games all day.

85 Iron Bowl was the Van Tiffin kick. 84 Iron Bowl was "wrong way Bo." Alot of people remember Bo going the wrong way, but they forget that Robert McGinty missed a field goal right at the end that would have won the game.

Thanks for clearing that up...funny how easy it is to forget those things too painful to remember :dunno:

I believe that was the 1974 Iron Bowl.

Was the Gossom incident where they had a chance to win late in the 74 game and tried to run a reverse wit Gossom? I believe it was Mike Dubose that forced the fumble, wasn't it?

I actually think 2012's loss to LSU was a heartbreaker, and it seemed to damage the team in a way that they never could overcome.

I was at the 84 IB, and it was a terrible loss. I still feel sick when I think about it. >:(

He was running a pattern and was bumped slightly out of bounds before coming back in to catch the ball.

They changed the rule the next year.

I was at the 2001 Iron Bowl where Carnell went down on the first drive, Andrew Zow threw up his falling sideways prayer touchdown pass to Jason McCaddley at the end of the first half, and the defense absolutely could not stop Ahmad Galloway and Santonio Beard. 31-7 Bama. I paid $225 for that stinking ticket. I was ticked when it was over!

I remember the Gossom thing now. I wasn't born until 1980 so everything I know about the misery of the Iron Bowl in the 70s comes from reading books. I remember reading about it now. I am glad they changed that rule because it played a big role in the big win in the 89 Iron Bowl when Alexander Wright got pushed out and then came back in and made a huge catch.

I was there with my father. Gusty Yearout was clipped (putting it mildly) on that play making it possible.

I also recall a game against Miami during the Dye era in which a blatant pass interference cost us the game. Dye was very classy about it, saying that if we'd played better it wouldn't have come down to that. We were robbed.

Does everyone remember the end of the 92 Georgia game when they got duped by the officials not spotting the ball and the clock ran out with them about to score on the one or two yard line? I think they lost 14-10.

This^^. When I read the title of this thread, the first one that popped in my mind was Florida with Kerwin Bell. I was a kid then, guessing '86 or so. Also, if the Tiffin kick isn't a top 5 heartbreaking loss im not sure what is. Much worse than the Ole Miss one in my opinion.

Edit** It was '85 game duh. :)
