TheBlueVue 177
I kind of know what to expect from RG every time I see something about him in print but its always good to see it again. I'm glad he's on our side again. Once again I am confident that all the coaches are on the same page. It's about doing everything in a way that puts Auburn in the best position to win. But I am equally excited to have Coach Garner and Coach Craig. As far as recruiters there are few equals to those two. With them being Auburn Men as well it is as close to a perfect situation as you can have. What other team has anything like it? Oh yeah, they are excellent coaches as well! Articles like this make it even tougher to wait until 8/31/2013.

This conference is freaking brutal. The best coaches in the country are in the SEC and they've proven that they can win at a high level with consistancy. Gues is an amazing college coach, but I do not see his style translating, at all, to the NFL. At this moment i don't have a view if it will or will not translate but it's certainly been shown that if college coaches have consistent success and esp. in the SEC the NFL will at least be interested. Gus has worked his way up the ladder so I certainly wouldn't be surprised the next step was the NFL if he had the chance with a good organization. I get that many love Gus but I'm not getting too attached. College coaches like challenges and many desire to be on the highest level they can to see if their system can work with the best of the best players. Just saying...Garner would be a good replacement if Gus where to live.

Gues is an amazing college coach, but I do not see his style translating, at all, to the NFL. A lot of his style is being used in the NFL - and I doubt Gus is running what he did at Shiloh Christian at AU, his system is heavy on the run and play action pass game...with some modifications I can see it being used in the NFL, but lets hope that does not come to be for quite some time. AURex 2,271
Nobody can say we can't get way ahead of ourselves here. :-\ Indeed! Sorry to be cranky, but .... I live in Georgia. I know a lot of UGA fans. And a lot of UGA fans were not sorry to see Garner leave, feeling that he could recruit (in the past), but couldn't coach them up, and his recruiting had dropped off in recent years. A lot of UGA fans were ready for Garner to leave.. I'm in a "prove it" mode right now regarding Auburn's defense. Before last season, everyone was stoked at how great the defense was going to be with VanGorder and his staff. Didn't quite work out as planned. So, I'm cautiously optimistic. But to all of them -- Johnson, Garner, etc -- prove it. Prove you can field a real Auburn defense that plays hard every down, hits hard, tackles, shuts down offenses -- for the entire 60 minutes. So, before we anoint Garner as the next head coach, let's see if he can coach up the DL first.

IronMan70 3,322
LOL, how did this turn into Garner for next HC ? History is replete with examples of good defensive coaches that were not very good head coaches. There is a totally different skill set involved. One would think we would want any HC to have proven he has the necessary skill set to be a HC even on a smaller stage. Gus was able to do that. Garner is a great guy, DL coach and recruiter but there is no way to know if it goes beyond that. Ellis Johnson seems to be happy back in his true wheelhouse doing what he is really good at. I am 100% in the "prove it" mode as well and for me it applies to all aspects of the team (and coaches), not just the D. Winning games is the only thing that counts in terms of coaches being "great" or players being "great". I like what I have seen/heard thus far regarding Gus and the staff, but what ultimately counts will be results on the scoreboard. wde

I live in GA as well and the only thUGA fans that expressed that sentiment were the butt-hurt ones. They always start out praising his recruiting then dry to get him with the "can't coach 'em up" argument. So thUGA kept him for 15 freakin years even though he can't coach? PUH-LEEEEASE! I'm not about to do all the research but he had guys drafted high THIS YEAR and a bunch of the others as well. How can it be said he can't coach? There is quite a list of DL and LB's and other positions as well that have been recruited and/or coached by CRG with nice NFL careers and a few Super Bowl rings as well. And AGAIN i'm not trying to anoint Garner...just an observation that he could be good a HC if given the opportunity. I'm not even all crazed about Gus far as that is concerned and everybody on a "prove it" status for me..coaches and players. I speak in terms of "potentional" because IMO we really don't know what he have yet until games are played.
TheBlueVue 177
RG's future will take care if itself. I will say this, I'm definitely glad he's back in Auburn and will go on record saying I don't give 2 craps what UGa fans are saying about him. As far as Gus and the NFL goes, I'm not worried about that at the moment. he hasn't completed 1 year as Auburn's HC yet.
