C.J. Uzomah

Often a good offensive play is set up by the series of plays previously executed. This was the case, when C.J. Uzomah hauled in a 20-yard pass play from Jonathan Wallace, which set up an eventual touchdown during the 2013 A-Day Game.

The play...

On this play the Auburn offense comes out in their base 3-WR set. Ricardo Louis and C.J. Uzomah are split out on the wide side of the field with Uzomah in the slot position. Just before the snap, Louis motions to his left and will stack up behind Uzomah. One of the keys to success was the 4 previous pass attempts to Louis before this play, where Louis was targeted in the short-passing game.

Two of those plays involved Uzomah lined up in the slot as a blocker for a WR-screen to Louis. At the snap, the CB and OLB on that side focus on Louis immediately, who runs a short out into the flat. Uzomah splits the two defenders, running right past them. He initially dips inside as if he is about to run a post and cuts back outside on a deep corner route.

Jonathan Wallace delivers an accurate throw over the LB and underneath the safety for a 20-yard gain and first down. Last season, Philip Lutzenkirchen caught 15 passes of which 4 resulted in a play of 15-yards or more. C.J. Uzomah had only 7 receptions during 2012 but 5 of them went for 15-yards or more. He finished the season averaging well over 19-yards per reception.

Uzomah is a big athletic target, who will create mismatches in the opposing secondary, especially if he is singled up on a LB. Look for Uzomah to be prime contributor in the pass offense, when it comes to generating impact plays in 2013. He is a player who can lineup in the backfield, on the line or in the slot.

Good job Stat. I see Uzomah making some big plays this season. WAR Eagle!!

Me too! I love CJ and what he could possibly do within the offense. He should create big matchup problems for teams IMO. If a couple of the WRs can step up and with the running game we have....I see CJ creating all kinds of problems for defenses. Fulse seems to be the real deal too. How is it that our TEs are much better than the WR's? How about we go 2 TEs?

Gus is best at building offense around what he has. I think he can find five olinemen out of al we have to pick from, if a qb steps up i think the offense will give us a nice season this fall. I think the other pieces are there. No clue about the defense. Gus will create plays for cj.

Maybe but at this point i think it will be the other way around. Our DL just needs to be more solid and i think we already have one the best secondaries in the SEC. Granted i don't think we will be a top 3 or 5 D in the SEC starting out but I feel like the D is ahead of the Offense. We just don't have QB issues..we have WRs issues as well. They are unproven and inconsistent just like the QBs.

I look at the wr issues in 08, enter gus in 09:abra kadabra wrs solid. They were not 4stars then either.

Both Uzomah and Fulse are impressive TEs with excellent hands. On the pass Fulse caught in the end zone on the busted coverage, he was like,"no big deal I think I'll just catch this and go back to the huddle". His hands were like a vacuum cleaner when the ball got near them. Those two guys are going to be big weapons for Gus this year.

It's not about the fact they are *4 or 5 stars. I don't care that much about stars. I care about consistency and play making ability. We have plenty of highly rated WRs who just have not stepped up. I feel our CB play will be very solid. We certainly need to sure up the S spot and improve DL play but when it comes to offense we have issues with QB and WR...that's pretty significant if we want to throw and catch the ball. I don't think will stink up the joint on offense but we can't run the ball everytime so we need better production. Sorry but i just don't think it's that simple as insert Gus and wha la. Yes, the offense will be better but after last year it will not take much for it to be better. Just don't think we are going to be some offensive juggernaut esp. with the 2 QBs from spring just b/c we have Gus....unless he can throw and catch the ball too.

Louis appears like he may be one of the WRs to step up. I like Denson as well.

I think Louis, Denson, and Coates all three will step up this year, along with a lot more touches for CJ and Fulse. Gus will spread the ball around AND have them ready for it. WDE!

we agree mostly. The qb and oline play and overall team chemistry did not allow me to rate the wr play fairly. They may be bad or great but im leaning to the later. They have size speed coaching and coach that KNOWS EXACTLY what he wants to do as opposed to experimenting around to hopefully find an identity. They are unproven but i feel good about this wr bunch.

I hope the competition sleeps on CJ this year because I believe he has what it takes to be an All-SEC guy at TE. He is big but very athletic and he runs very well. He has big play ability as well in that he excels when the pressure is on. He was fun to watch at North Gwinnett. I went to see them when Lattimore's Team from SC came. ML was a beast.

That sounds like a good solid receiving group! :)

I've been predicting a big season for CJ since the end of last season...he's just too big and too talented for me not to think he's going to become a much larger part of the offense now that Lutzie has moved on.
