I miss the Tuberville era because

the LSU game was usually a monster determining who won the west and the Alabama game was an afterthought at best. I know its nostalgia but I look back on those games - even the losses- with a great deal of fondness. Fun games against a great opponent and always something crazy happening. Six in a row over Bama during that time was great but with a few exceptions, I don't remember the Bama games being as exciting as the LSU games.

Just my opinion. Your mileage may vary!

WDE!!!

Well let us see, we played D, could win big games, good things.

Then there were things not to miss:

BBQ gang, Nall Ball, duck hunting for new jobs / contract negotiation trips, backstabbing and incompetent AD >:( running off good help.

At least, we don't have to worry about the inept AD anymore. :-\ :)

HUGE Coach Tub fan here. I wish him the best. He did many GREAT things for Auburn University in my eyes. I miss that era because I was that much younger, had that much more hair, and that much better eyesight.

I think you left out a few other things

Probably. I am starting to forget things in my advancing years.

I did like the fact that I thought we had a chance to win every game we played. There were some disappointing losses. There were also games we won that nobody gave a chance of winning.

God I miss Tubs. Hopefully Gus gets us back. The good thing is that Gus reminds me way more of Tubs than Chiz.

6-3 is what i dont miss....and some of the most overly conservative offense ever seen...not being able to beat the Arkansas's, etc ...he could win the big one but lose the smaller game...good coach but I like the guy driving the Bus now....

Time heals all wounds...

Time wounds all heels...

Tubs represented AU very well in his time here. From the first game he coached at AU (I think it was a come-from-behind win vs. App. State), I usually felt like we could win any game we played. Even in 2008, I had some confidence each week. That defense was still quite good, the Franklin/BBQ Gang experiment was an unmitigated disaster and left the offense anemic.

He never lost to Urban Meyer and basically AU had no business winning either of those games. 6 in a row and 7-3 against UAT, should have won in 2001, had 'em on the ropes in 1999, could have been 10-3 at halftime in 2008 (even with that team!). A couple against LSU got away from us but still we were in the mix until the end.

Tommy Tuberville was no doubt a great coach of whom I owe a debt of gratitude. I hated to see him go in that I felt like he was about a season or 2 away from having Auburn back as one of the best in the SEC. The Lsu games were a lot of fun even if I did see some horrible treatment from the Lsu fans that landed one young man in the hospital with significant injuries. I think I hate Lsu every bit as much as the school in Western Alabama. Tuberville and Spurrier gave Saban fits while old nick was in Baton Rouge. I wish Saban would have gone 12-4, 13-3, in his time with the Dolphins. Who knows, bammer could now be a part of conference Usa to satisfy their fan base with 10 plus win seasons.

Now is now though, I have complete faith in CGM and feel like he will turn the ship around quickly and have it in serious battle ready condition to make the SEC groan; (Oh Lord, Auburn is back with a vengience)

....we won so many championships. :Sing:

So are you saying Coach Dye wasn't a very good coach? You are also saying Coach Chiz is tied for the best coach ever at Auburn. Kind of failed logic IMO.

I concur. I'm on the Gus Bus too.

I liked Tubby but I think a change was good and timely for all involved. He certainly won some big games at AU and for that im appreciative.

Yep, Tubs did plenty of good things and I appreciate that, but like you said you have to consider the complete body of work. You could always count on his D, but he did not place the same expectations on the O side of the ball and it showed. He relied on a strong running, strong D and a solid kicking game to win. Saban was similar, but since coming to bama his game has evolved. Saban is recruiting more skill talent on the O side and giving his OC more freedom. Tubs did some of this in 2004, but regressed later. If Tubs evolved on O he would have another HC spot at a major FB program. It was time to part and I am glad we did.

I always respected Coach Tuberville and hated to see him leave the program. For the most part, I thought he always obtained the most of his players and his teams were certainly more prepared mentally and physically than Chizik's teams. More than anything else, I hope this is a quality we will eventually see in Malzahn's teams.

With that being said, it should be noted the Alabama teams Chizik faced were much better than the Bama teams Tuberville faced. Alabama had a win pct of 59%, when Tuberville was at Auburn and a win pct of 91%, when Chizik's teams squared off with them. The 7 victories Tuberville had against Bama came against a combined win pct of 53%. To his credit, Tuberville's teams did defeat 2 Bama teams ranked in the top-10 but the remaining 5 victories came against Bama teams with a win pct of just 42 percent.

For the most part, Tuberville had a solid running game, solid defense and good special teams, which can win a lot of games. His only downfall in terms of offense was the offense was often too conservative. Of course the same can be said about Pat Dye teams too.

Under CTT at least AU put a respectable, great effort team on the field (except 2008 although the effort was still there). CTT needed to be fired, resigned, quit whatever in 2008 because both he and AU needed a divorce. I don't want CTT back, but the hiring of Gene Chizik set the football program back years and was a travesty (other than Cam, Nick Fairley, Gus Malzahn and Tracy Rocker in 2010). We obviously would not have won the BCS in 2010 under CTT, but we would have avoided the embarrassment on and off of the field that was 2011 and 2012.

Great comments on this thread. One of the things I hated when the SEC went to the two division format was the elimination of traditional rivalries between AU/FLA and AU/Tenn. Under Tuberville, LSU became to me as important a rivalry as Alabama and it was always early in the year and set the tone for the year. Stat is of course correct, some of the Bama teams weren't very good, but for the third game of the year LSU always seemed to be good.

Great observation on LSU. The Bengal Tigers slowly became a huge game under Tuberville and remains a major opponent today. Overall, LSU had a win pct of 72% against Tuberville teams and 81% against Chizik. The last 6 LSU teams Tuberville faced had a win pct of 81%.

Overall, Tuberville faced an SEC slate of a 59% win pct and Chizik took on a win pct of 67%. I think it's safe to say the SEC as it appears today, is at an all time high.

I have to agree. I felt we had a chance of winning game we went into. However, there were games we should have never lost. Towards TT's end, we lost to South Florida and to Vandy.I still get sick when ever I think of those games and how USF and Vandy took it right to us and we never answered back.

Wtf?!? You ask me a question which doesn't require an answer and then assume how I would answer that question?!? After doing that, just to take the cake, you say failed logic. Irony, my friend. You gots it.
