Jeremy Johnson taking classes already?

Recommended Posts

I was flipping through my Google News page when I saw a link to AUtigers.com (I'll put a link at the bottom of the post) that said as of today 4 of our 2013 signees have started taking classes. The site is a scout.com paid site. From the small preview blurb, I can see 3 names:

1. Jeremy Johnson, QB, Carver HS, Montgomery, AL

2. Kamryn Melton, CB, Dothan HS, Dothan, AL

3. Deon Mix, OL, South Panola HS, Batesville, MS

Can anybody confirm this? If it is true, then JJ getting to campus and being able to work with the team 2+ weeks before NM is huge IMO.

EDIT: Fourth player to start taking classes is Kenny flowers (Credit to StatTiger).

4. Kenny Flowers, LB, Hutchinson CC, Hutchinson, KS

Huge would have been getting here for spring practices. But I agree it does give him an advantage as far as building chemistry.

Not huge at all. It will be Nick Marshall's job to lose. The coaches are not going to burn JJ's redshirt unless they have to.

Yeah, I don't think JJ getting here a couple weeks at most ahead of NM is really a factor. Coaches obviously would not want to burn JJ's redshirt unless they have to..which they won't.

Still very good news. JJ if needed is there andit will be very interesting to see were he is now verses Marshall, Frasier, etc.

I still do not get this love for Nick Marshall. He may very well end up the starting qb which is fine with me. I want who ever is best to start but no one knows how well he is going to do and it is not like is numbers are other worldly. I still believe it will be either Frazier or Wallace but don't really care as long as it is better qb play than we have had. I think the majority are just scared of what we have seen and are just jumping on the bandwagon of the new guy because most don't think the others can do it. Why everyone thinks a guy who has not been in the offense, who has no trust, or timing with the other players is going to be way better than a guy who has been in the offense since he played high school ball and has actually played under Gus before. Again if Nick is the best then play him but honestly I find it crazy that some of you can be so certain as if you are the coach. I remember many on here being certain we would have 8 or 9 wins last year and 9 or 10 the year before. Lets just see what happens when they all practice together.

Well, given our recent QB play, I think it's pretty natural for folks to gravitate toward the unknown quantity. It happens all the time. As far as no trust, timing, etc- if Gus doesn't think it's an issue (which since he signed him it he doesn't appear to) then we shouldn't either. NM was brought in for a reason it's as simple as that. Doesn't mean he is guaranteed to start, but he certainly has a big opportunity. WDE.

FWIW my perspective on this come from people close to the staff. Another note here, his coach said he's as good or better than Eli Roberson and Michael Bishop, former K-State stud QBs that he coached

We have one QB that's been in Gus' offense since 8th grade, he has the athletic ability and the knowledge of the system, but he is the one that looks scared and disoriented. We have another QB that was as green as a frog that was forced into duty late last season - he never looked afraid, he took control and showed us a flash of leadership that had been sorely missing, but he's just too young. A team can not survive the SEC with those two components managing an offense - they'll get eaten alive like.

At this point, I have no trust in anyone but the coaching staff. There's a reason Gus felt the need to put a band-aid on the QB position, he needs to stop the bleeding from the '12 season. If Nick Marshall provides the bandage and a little salve to make this offense look even somewhat respectable, then that's fantastic IMO.

JUCO players are rarely ever brought in to sit the bench. JUCO QB's are rarely brought in to hold a clipboard. Gus sees the questions we have at QB, and he addressed them with the best option he could. It's still a wide-open race until a QB is named, but I am personally holding out hope for NM. I like KF, and JW impressed me last year, all things considered. The fact that neither of them have stepped up as the clear-cut QB as of right now tells me that they are still struggling a little. If NM doesn't pan out at QB, he will see the field in another position, so it's a win-win situation with him. We do not need another Cam Newton to be successful, but we do need a QB that is confident, can make ALL THE THROWS, and can use his feet to get out of trouble. KF can throw the deep ball, but can't finesse a touch pass. JW can throw the shorter throws with zip or finesse, but lacks the arm to go deep. Both are inconsistent.

Whoever Coach Malzahn and Coach Lashlee decide to go with, I just hope we make the decision early in the fall, so the team can get behind the QB and work on chemistry and timing. If we are going into the middle of August with no clear QB, then I will be worried, and will temper my expectations even further for this team.

War Eagle!!!

Is NM graduating today or the 20th?

Does not matter. He is not reporting to Auburn til June 14th or 15th.

Not huge at all. It will be Nick Marshall's job to lose. The coaches are not going to burn JJ's redshirt unless they have to.

"Huge" may have been the wrong word, but I definitely think it is indicitive of the kind of player that JJ is going to be. It shows that he is a "first one in, last one out" kind of worker, which (combined with talent, coaching, and just a sprinkle of luck) may result in a fantastic career. I was talking about this year, and I certainly hope that we don't have to burn JJ's RS, however I think that it also bodes well for the future.

All the possible QB's have issues and all have upside. NM has physical Talent but horrible TD/INT ratio. KF has great arm strength knowledge of the offense but seems to freeze annd not make a decision, Wallace has quick feet, studies hard and seems to be a natural leader there are questions about his arm strength, Johnson is a physical speciment with talent but is not very polished and is a true freshman.

Which player can address his weaknesses will be the starting QB.

Familiarity with the offense being back with Gus and having been around for two years there is a chance a light will come on and KF will become what many of us predicted. Some QB's take longer for the loght to come on some it never happens.

NM weakness may have been due to lack of talent around him so he had to try and do to much or like KF he just did not make good decisions.

Wallace leadership skills behind a strong O-line with a Bevy of running backs along with his quick feet and solid decision making could mask his long ball weakness there have been many great college QB's who could not throw the long ball.

Johnson is like all true Freshman QB's an unknown quantity he could be a Johnny football, a flop or a developing QB that becomes great to early to say.

I don't know why but I think the light may come on for KF.

JJ weighs in today at 226 lbs...

11 lbs of muscle added in 2 months during the offseason? With the stress of graduation, media attention, etc? Pretty impressive if you ask me.

Not to mention he played Basketball from December through April. Seems strange to me.

How do you know it's muscle?

Because JJ doesn't seem like the kind of guy that puts on 11 lbs of fat while playing one sport and training for another

JJ is serious about being a QB at Auburn. I don't see him adding 11lbs of fat. He is getting ready to lead AU to many championships. He has goals and will be an incredible leader IMO. I can't see him on the sofa, eating Bon-Bon's and watching Real Housewives of the ATL!!
