Marketing the Malzahn Offense

Look at Auburn football as a brand and football is our product.

We have lots of competitors in the SEC and we need to make our product different than anyone else. I am going to use the Oregon model in the Pac 12. When Oregon plays anyone, everyone talks about how fast they are from the announcers to the casual fans because they all bought into the Oregon = fast. Is Oregon faster? Who really knows and who cares..... Oregon is recognized as having a fast offense and some will tell you it is the fastest in the country. Now that Chip is gone who will take Oregon's place? We do.

I think that Auburn as a unique opportunity to market itself as a product unlike anyone else. We could be the fastest most explosive team in the country, in a few years. I don't think we will be at the top of the yards production chart this year but next year and the years after that we will be an offensive force. I think Auburn needs to be positioning itself to take advantage of this by marketing it's new offense as different by using some slogans and terms and visuals unique to Auburn's offense, and I would create a defense campaign as well. Broadcasters and fans love this type of stuff and I think it will help out with recruiting as well.

I believe that Auburn needs to differentiate itself from the other teams in the SEC and from PAC 12, ACC, BIG 10, and BIG 12 as well.

Let me know what you think, just something I have been thinking about.

Considering the culture we now live in, this is not a bad idea at all.

The only thing I would add is we need to see it before naming and promoting it. ;)

Maybe this is a topic to be revisited after we do.

How about we call Jordan Hare stadium "the jungle"?

As long as we can call Malzhan's offense, "The Spread Eagle". :Sing:

I think that this is a fantastic idea. If anybody has seen the Arky State "Red Wolves Revival" on Ryan Russell, one of his quotes was "we're trying to be the fastest team in college football". I can't imagine that this has changed.

I think orange is a faster color than blue, so we should put it ..... what for it..... on the facemasks.

I'm not into slogans, motto's, cliche's, etc. Just show up on Saturday and kick your opponents ass is all I want to see my Auburn Tigers do.

A team differentiates themselves when they can consistantly compete for championships. Year after year after year they are in championship discussions, pre-season and post-season. Those teams are different from all the other teams and it shows when they take the field.

100% +1 on this! The promotion will take care of itself if we are winning and winning championships! I don't want just a nice "show" on offense; that puts up large numbers then just tanks when it comes to the big games or never able to get over the hump to contend for championships. I don't care what we run on O or D...just build it to be a championship caliber team...year to year!

Living in a Sun Belt town, I kept up with Malzahn last year at Arky State and even went to the game when they came to town. I wanted to see if they ran faster than he did during the initial AU years (my thoughts were that CGC held Gus back). The '09 Tenn game was the only time I really remember AU going really fast and they totally gassed the Vol defense that day. I was actually a little dismayed with the Arky St offense last year as they were not as fast as I thought they would be (although they were speedy). Based on Gus' AU history and what I saw last year, I have to say that Oregon and Texas A&M were a little faster than Malzahn. Maybe he can speed it up if he ever gets a QB for longer than 1 year. Maybe he doesn't have to be the fastest.....just fast enough with crisp execution.

I saw Arky vs Troy game live and like you i thought yet Arky St. was fast...but not as fast as A&M or Oregon. Doesn't bother me the pace is not the same as those teams...what concerns me is the what our play calling will be like with a fast pace offense under Gus. What i like about those two teams offenses is their playcalling and discipline within moving so fast. I'm just not a big fan of the number of screens and reverses we run in a game. I get that it can set up other plays within the offense but i just feel like it shouldn't be prominent plays in the playbook and ran 4 or 5 times in a game with the type of defenses we face in the SEC.

Get the ball down field...even if it's a 5 or 10 yard pass i don't care but it's too much action in the back filed and side line to side line for me. Throw a 10-15 yard pass and let guys use their speed to make things happen. We'd be better off just running it than depending on the WRs to block consistently for bubble screens and reverses. Guess I'll just have to wait and see as everything else i like what I'm seeing from a philosophy standpoint on offense.

The SEC will have quite a few speedy offenses this year - aTm is HUNH and fast as lightening with a rockstar QB running around like crazy, OleMiss runs a HUNH offense that's speedy, LSU's new OC Cam Cameron says he's speeding things up, Butch Davis at UT says he will impliment a lot of HUNH, Gus will run his HUNH/high speed attack. All I can say is the defenses on these teams better be well conditioned or they won't be able to keep pace with their O's.

Gus's offense isn't designed to be all speed all the time, it's designed to get to the line ASAP and be able to go super fast so that the defense has to set up and show their hand, then they make the decision based on the situation whether they want to go fast or slow. This technique works on defenses because they have to be ready for the quick plays and the HUNH pace, but they can't rely on it. So they may get half a second of a breather, but they never know if they are going to get that. It also keeps the coaches from knowing when they can sub, how much they will have to sub, how much they have to prepare reserves for the upcoming games, etc.

In the case of UT in 2009, going as fast as possible worked because of the style of defense that UT was running. Monte Kiffin was a former NFL DC (like Van Gorder) who knew how to defend against Pro-style offenses... and that's about it. The HUNH offense was still relatively new to the SEC in 2009, especially the way Malzahn runs it, so Monte didn't know how to defend against it. Lane is just a terrible coach/human being and so he wasn't much help either. The 2009 UT team was similar to the 2012 AU team... very hyped, new DC who was supposed to be very good due to NFL experience, disappointing results.

(If you couldn't tell, I'm from Knoxville and called myself a UT fan at the time. There was huge outrage over Lane being a "one-and-done" coach, he had to have armed guards protect him so that he could leave his house. His and his wife's phone numbers were painted on "the rock" on UT's campus)

I know that it's not designed to go as fast as the other teams mentioned by the previous poster. As i stated i don't care how fast we go as long as we are effective in whatever speed we do go. I know how the HUNH works...just was an observation when i saw Arky St play live and comparing them to the other two teams...that's all. I don't have an issue with if we go as fast as A&M or Oregon or slower...i don't care. I just want whatever we do to be effective and guys have the ability to execute and have discipline doing it.

It would be one thing if our university's decision makers had the slightest idea of how important ANYTHING viewed nationally using the Auburn name is to the entire university's national image. Such as nationally televised athletics. The years of silence during horrendously inaccurate defamation of all things Auburn shows an almost childish naivite by AU about marketing. Lets start by working on the general publics' opinion that any success Auburn has on the football field is due to cheating. Don't think that's the general consensus? Have some discussions w/ folks coast to coast and it's still alarmingly Cam + $ + AU. Say you don't care? Then you're part of the problem. Clean up that marketing fiasco, win a few championships again, then worry about "style" points.
