The Gus Bus: who's driving it?

We know Coach Rhett Lashlee has grown up a prodigy of Malzahn, to say the least. In the team's best interest, will Malzahn leave the offense all to Lashlee and trust him with play-calling, or will Malzahn run the whole show with Lashlee just as a name filler for the OC?

I think it has been said before that they both have a hand in it. Agree on the game plan but I think Lashlee calls the plays...or it was that way (I think) at Arky St.

The only really successful HC to act as his own OC & QB coach was Spurrier while at UF. He's not been doing that while at USC. That's not to say Malzahn couldn't do it but there's an overall administrative responsibility as HC that needs addressing and I think Malzahn recognizes that. Lashlee is very young but has been Malzahn's protege in running his offense. I have to believe they're both on the same page with preparation and game planning after working together at ASU. I'm sure Malzahn will want Laslee to develop into a competent OC and let him call plays but will also retain veto power when necessary.

It has been my understanding (from reading interviews and back and forth from the coaches to the media) that Rhett controls the game plan....and the practices...under the supervision of Gus. But on game day...it is all Gus driving that bus....

Some coaches that call their own plays : Chip Kelly, Bobby Petrino, Brian Kelly, Jimbo Fisher, Mike Leach

Some other guys called plays for a while after becoming head coaches but eventually turned over duties: Urban Meyer, Chris Peterson, Mark Richt, Steve Spurrier

My suspicion is that Gus will call plays but we shall see.

This is exactly what Gus has said in recent interviews.

In Gus's first year, it would be surprising if he didn't call most of the plays on game day. I'm sure he wants to get things going in the right direction. Gus will make sure that Rhett gets the experience he needs in the first year to eventually take over the responsibility if that is the direction Gus decides to go. CDC might even get a chance to do some play calling in the right spots.

When gus decides to go full speed, i think HE has to call it himself. There is no time to collaborate.

Per Coach Lashlee, when speaking at our Nashville AU Club, it is a collaborative effort, but CRL is main play caller.

He actually voiced the words "I am the main play caller"?

That doesn't sound right. TBH I hope that's not what he said.

I listened to that and actually I think he said, " I am the MAN." Of course I could be mistaken. ;D

I am pretty sure he said, "I'M A MAN DAMMIT. I'M 40 YEARS OLD AND I'M A MAN."

In his case he would be saying I'M 30 YEARS OLD AND I'M A MAN.
