In his first team meeting as Auburn’s coach, Malzahn stood before his players and laid out the approach his program would follow in this ultra-competitive state.

“We’re worried about ourselves,” Malzahn said Tuesday night during a Tiger Trek stop at Lakepoint Resort State Park in Eufaula. “We’re worried about getting better. I told our guys in our first team meeting, ‘Hey, I’m not worried about what happened last year. I’m worried about moving forward, getting better.’

“Auburn’s a great place. It consistently has won, and won some championships. That’s on our mind. We’ve got some work to do, but we’re going in the right direction.”

...

“Obviously, you know the state of Alabama is very important to us, specifically recruiting,” Malzahn said. “We’re worried about us and, experience is if you worry about yourself, Auburn’s a great place and you can be very successful.”

Malzahn wasn’t putting a tangible measurement on how successful Auburn can be this season. His lone goal is to “get better,” he said. Obviously, the coach is aware another 3-9 season won’t cut it.

...

“It didn’t take long to figure out everything,” Malzahn said. “Just the fact that I’m back as a head coach, I don’t think that changes anything as my perspective. It’s still very important, and that’s our rival. And I get that.

“I was here before, so I knew exactly what I was getting into. We’re very competitive. We have high goals and high dreams at Auburn. So I really enjoy it and am looking forward to it.”

On QBs (via al.com) ...

"Well, we’ve been fortunate enough to be successful with a lot of different quarterback styles," Malzahn said Tuesday night before a speaking engagement at the Lakepoint Resort Lodge in Eufaula. "Once we pick our starting quarterback, we try to build around his strengths. We’ve been fortunate enough to have some runners, some throwers and some guys that do both. So that’ll be a big key, once we decide who our starting quarterback is in the fall. We’ll build around his strengths."

...

"I think in this day and time – especially in our league – you’ve got to have quarterbacks that can create plays when things break down because with the pass rushers that we have in this league, things are going to break down," Malzahn said. "So you need to have a guy that can escape and make plays. That doesn't mean straight dropback or dual-threat."

This is why i think NM can and will win the job and him missing spring will not be a big factor.

What kind of bug is that on his collar? Starting at the 8:50 mark. I know I'm not the only one that saw it?

Just guessing, but the way that it crawled up and then just stopped with the motion, I think it was probably a Kudzu Bug.

My mom attended the event (she's even more crazy about AU football than I am), said the place event was sold out and the crowd was responsive and asked great questions.

She told me that Malzahn ran down every position and discussed the players competing for that position, down to 3 deep at times. He had a lot of good things to say about the program, the coaches and players both on and off the field. It's little things like knowing your 3 deep at every position that tells me his is 100% focused on this program. Every time I read an article or see an interview I feel more more that we made the right choice. I realize that will be determined on the field & recruiting over the next few years but I'm glad he's back.

I completely agree. I was hesitant when the hire was made, but after seeing the staff he put together, the recruiting class he managed, and the ammount of effort he and his staff are puting in, I feel that (at this point) this hire was an A+.
