TitanTiger 21,580
http://blog.al.com/w...ystems_chi.html I haven't dug into the details on this but maybe someone here can help me figure it out...what does Alabama gain, other than thumbing their nose at Obama, by turning this down? autigeremt 7,260
What happens when the three years are up, Texas????? When the federal money runs out in three years, what happens in the State of Alabama, or any other state, that decides to "opt in" to this expanded program? Not sure I would call this a gain, but the state would not have to assume replacement funding of the program three years from now when the feds drop their initial support level. So if the feds remove their funding after 3 years, the state of Alabama will have to get the cash to run this program or tell users it's not available anymore. Similar to what Clinton did in funding salaries for extra police at the local level. Once the funding from the federal government ended, the local governments had to take over the funding or layoff the extra police.

The state picks up a small percentage. The plus for the state is that folks who now tie up emergency rooms and jack up insurance costs for others would be largely funded by federal Medicaid dollars. I think they will eventually give in. Too many hospitals rely on Medicaid dollars. Doctors and hospitals will probably eventually step in. Sure, Bentley is a doctor, but i think for now he is grandstanding to show he is going to resist as long as he is allowed to show he fought it. Obviously, the state will have to find a way to fund their portion down the road, once the federal government gradually reduces their dollar for dollar match. Besides, Congress actually helped a state like Alabama by passing the online sales tax bill. Not sure how much more revenue Alabama will get, but it can work like a new revenue stream to help pay for the Medicaid expansion.
