Not only does this disclosure shed more light on how the NSA's formidable eavesdropping apparatus works domestically it also suggests the Justice Department has secretly interpreted federal surveillance law to permit thousands of low-ranking analysts to eavesdrop on phone calls.

"That includes not only metadata, but the actual content of the conversations." That shoots the theory of , but they're not listening only collecting metadata, right between the eyes.

If the NSA wants "to listen to the phone," an analyst's decision is sufficient, without any other legal authorization required, Nadler said he learned. "I was rather startled," said Nadler, an attorney and congressman who serves on the House Judiciary committee.

Nader is a very liberal NY democrat congressman. If he and Feinstein did not know of these capabilities, they have been kept in the dark too.

So much for all the safeguards the government claimed were in place,

Just a poll here, but did ANYONE really buy the crapola about not listening to the calls? REALLY???

Just food for thought:

If you employ a VOIP for your phone network, then, by definition, you are not wiretapping to listen to the calls. It is a simple packet search/sweep and that would never require a warrant because that is functionally the same as eavesdropping on email and text messages. SMS development and VOIP are great technologies that unfortunately were never considered by the Legislative Branch. Now, who cares, they have been listening/gathering so long and getting away with it we are all deadmeat anyway. One or two rogue employees at the NSA could cripple a political party, take down a govenor, TAKEOUT A FIVE STAR GENERAL THAT ISNT TOWING THE LINE...or pretty much do whatever they want for their friends.

Was reading the comments on that article, not to be part of the black helicopter crowd, BUT, more food for thought:

1) Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert's strange last minute vote flip on Obamacare...

2) Petreaus being runoff from his job at the CIA overnite BY AN EMAIL SCANDAL...

3) Analysts making $BNs off of Wall Street Trades???

NOT SAYING IT HAPPENED, SAYING THAT THE POTENTIAL IS DEFINITELY THERE, AND WOW THE POSSIBILITIES...

What's funny is, we'll have some folks chime in next to rationalize this away just like they did the metadata. And they'll blissfully act as if this is really the limit of privacy-invastive stuff the NSA is doing to us, even though that's basically what they insisted about the metadata while reassuring us that the content of the calls weren't being looked at. Now this shoe drops.

Bottom line: if this is what the NSA will actually admit to, go ahead and brace yourself because that means there's a whole bunch of even worse stuff they're still hiding from us.

Absolutely....they make it sound like that low level idealist Snowden spilled ALL the beans and they act appalled.... in public. But among themselves they are happy with this stroke of good luck and disinformation since Snowden actually knows only a small percent of what is really possible and the American public remains in the dark about the serious stuff.

Not taking sides here, because I don't (yet) know the "truth", but:

http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2013/06/jerrold-nadler-does-not-thinks-nsa-can-listen-us-phone-calls/66278/

.....CNet's Declan McCullugh published a story Saturday night purporting to prove Edward Snowden's claim that NSA analysts can wiretap domestic phone calls without a warrant. His case was built entirely around an exchange between Rep. Jerrold Nadler and FBI director Robert Mueller that happened during an FBI oversight hearing with the House Judiciary committee on Thursday.

The story drew a swift and immediate reaction over social media Saturday night. But when more closely examined the conversation doesn't concretely prove McCullugh's claims. In the exchange, Nadler claims the House was told during a classified briefing that NSA analysts didn't need a warrant to tap into domestic phone calls. But McCullugh never acknowledged Mueller's part in the exchange and Nadler's uncertainty that could paint the exchange in another light. Here is the entire conversation transcribed in full:

Just playing "devils advocate" ;)

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) said the National Security Agency is not listening to the content of Americans’ phone calls.

Expect all of them have signed secrecy agreements on the matter. Everyone in Washington will go to their graves telling lies about this before ever admitting that they are listening in or checking content of e-mails and phone calls. Probably best to assume that nothing is private any more.

Glad you guys don't allow yourselves to get bogged down with evidence.

Here we go again........:)

Which evidence are you talking about....Snowden's statement that it's happening....or NSA officials who deny it? Why not run a test....make a couple phone calls to different people....in say California...and make cryptic statement along the line that "the bomb is done...moving to put it in place" ......then see what happens. :dunno:

You want to believe his statement that any contract analyst with an outside company can listen to any call he wants and that's considered okay. Guys like him have complete discretion in such matters. Okay. Believe that.
