Business failures vs start ups

Recommended Posts

How do those on the left spin this trend? I would ask - how does this happen in America, the birth place of the concept of wealth creation? Before American emerged in the world the overwhelming majority of wealth accumulation came from conquest but then with the advent of ownership of private property in very short order America quickly became the worlds largest producer of most everything not only of the attendant wealth that came with it.

So, its safe to say that Americans are pretty decent at creating wealth that is, unless the govt strangles them with excessively intrusive regulatory policies, saddles them with uncertain costs with healthcare mandates, makes the licensing process so difficult most just give up in the process and tax the living s*** out of their profits...we currently have highest corporate tax in the world

This administration needs to understand that the entrepreneurial element provides 97%of the job opportunities and small businesses are the engine of future job opportunities and wealth creation. As long as they are excessively burdened and treated with suspicion small business growth will continue to decline and thus, so will America.

I like this article on the subject better. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/05/05/u-s-businesses-are-being-destroyed-faster-than-theyre-being-created/

Looking at the graph and observing our current economic status, I would say the trends are more a result of cultural changes than of actions by politicians currently in office. These downward trends have been in play for a long time. The end result will not be positive for our country in my opinion.

? Where are you drawing the cultural inference? I don't doubt it; I just don't see it in the article or data.

Why should the "left" want to "spin" this at all? :dunno: The people who did the study in question (Brookings) say upfront they don't have an explanation.

"Brookings doesn’t attribute the trend to anything in particular, stating that would “requir[e] a more complete knowledge about what drives dynamism, and especially entrepreneurship, than currently exists.”

I was referring to the large drop in new start up companies over a long period of time. The data in the chart suggests to me that we have fewer people willing to step out with new ventures. I reasoned (maybe incorrectly) that our citizens have become comfortable in their cubicles.

I am proud to have contributed to both trends. Start ups and shutdowns :) Working on a new startup right now.

We are headed for disaster. It's not going to end well.

Calm down Cassandra. ;)

I'm not worried. I'm prepared. Are you? :)

Brookings doesn't try to explain their findings but it seems fair to conclude, if it is a cultural change, that change has been expedited by the least business friendly administration in my lifetime. Healthcare mandates, intrusive regulatory policies, confiscatory tax policy(I would say thats a fair assessment given US's highest corporate tax rate in the world)along with PC police who have been emboldened by Obama's deference to the grievance crowd ALL make doing business increasingly more difficult

You sure do post some fatalistic "awful-izing" posts for someone who is not worried. Like I have said, you need to keep in mind that things are never as good - or bad - as they seem.

I would agree with this but, sadly, that doesn't mean they're not worse NOW than they have been on the business community since the 1970s.

The company I worked for I did great in the 70's. It all depends.
