Here is the percentage of SEC players taken during the 1st round of the NFL Draft:

1970-1979: 10.1%

1980-1989: 15.5%

1990-1999: 18.6%

2000-2009: 20.8%

2010-2014: 30.6%

*Note the spike from 2010-2014, compared to 2000-2009.

Here is the percentage of 4 & 5 star players from the entire nation, signed by SEC teams (Based on Scout ratings):

2002-2009: 24.8%

2010-2014: 32.9%

*From 2002-2009, 1/4 of the nation's elite talent signed with SEC programs. From 2010-2014, it has increased to nearly 1/3 of the nation's elite talent.

Thanks! We've added 4 teams in the past 20 years but directionally it's very impressive. What conf(s) is tracking in the opposite direction (if you've got those numbers generated already)?

the conference expansion from 10 to 12 teams in 1992 and from 12 to 14 teams in 2012 helped some, but overall there is a flood of talent into the SEC.

11 SEC teams playing in the 16 BCS Championship games from 1999 to 2014 also documents the domination.

My guess would be the Big 10 and/or Pac 12

Breakdown by major conference (2010-2014)

Pct of 4 & 5 star recruits signed:

ACC: 12.6% and 3.37 per team

B12: 13.4% and 4.49 per team

B10: 15.1% and 4.24 per team

P12: 17.3% and 5.10 per team

SEC: 32.9% and 8.53 per team

Interesting data for talent signed and talent drafted. Our recent loss in the national title game to an ACC team is the most recent proof IMO however that the more logical talent comparison should be between teams instead of conference vs conference. I hear this bizarre line of reasoning here in Tallahassee all the time, including from the local media: the best ACC team beat the best SEC team, therefore the ACC is better/is more talented/does more with it's talent than the SEC.

What was the ACC's percentage in the 1st round? Off hand I can think of FSU's WR, Clemson's WR and UNCs TE that went in the 1st round. If we're going the conference-connection route, be interesting to see how the conference siging the 5th most 4-5 stars did with them during college compared to the SEC.

I would have trouble not laughing at someone if they really tried to argue the ACC was better than the SEC in football. Outside of Fl ST, Clemson, and maybe Miami I don't think a single team in the ACC would have a wining record if they played in the SEC. Their best beat our best for sure but I don't see how that relates to the conference as a whole.

I agree. I would also add that FSU barely defeated Auburn with Jimbo Fisher's 4th FSU team vs. Gus Malzahn's 1st Auburn team. I believe we finally have the right HC in place when it comes to recruiting AND player development.

Golf, do you know what year that pic of Cliff Hare was taken? That's even before my time. ;D
