Defensive Tackles 2015 - Our Best Chances?

I'm a believer that defenses are set by great interior defensive tackles. When we've had great one, we have had great teams.

I see a lot of names that don't really seem to be interested in us, or so it appears.

What DTs do we have the best shot of getting?

Another DT that AU is looking at is DJ Jones. He is a JC at NE Miss Community College. He is the #3 ranked JC player. (There is a premium article on him in 247 right now).

Trent Thompson and his Mom are locking in with Fuga

Daron Payne (grew up an AU fan) is drinking the crimson kool-aid

Albert Huggins is a huge 99% Clemson lean

Fletcher Adams is for MSU to take

But Daylon Mack is looking and if he comes to WCW, maybe our staff can flip him.

And I like DJ Jones too, but it seems Clemson has the upper ground at the moment.

Not much info out on Jauntavius Johnson, but last I heard was he was an Auburn lean.

Absolutely wrong. Roc Thomas was a huge Bama fan growing up, and chose Auburn over Bama in the end. Just because Payne was or is an Auburn fan, does not mean that he is an automatic lock to Auburn. We started recruiting him later then Bama did and they have the edge at this point which is why we cooled off on his recruiting. He is 17 years old and you're bashing him for doing what's best for him? CRG has plenty of tricks up his sleeve, not to mention it's only May. Keep calm.

I think there's a lot of mutual dis-interest between Payne and Auburn. He can clearly fit in UAT's scheme as a nose guard that can't run 10 yards. He'd have to shake off some pounds and run a lot to work into Auburn's defense.

Number 1 I haven't bashed him at all! Just because I have a different view of how things work in this state between the 2 schools? It may be different from where u are, but in the shoals and Huntsville area that's a line u don't cross, you're either bama or AU, there is no in between. As far as roc goes, I think he saw the depth chart and saw we needed him and was recruiting him more than bama, they really didn't want him until they figured out they were NOT getting the kid from Baton Rouge.

According to a bama alum? That does not exactly narrow it down to an absolute fact. I agree that most of their alum believe or "know" he has been a silent. Ill run over to one of their boards right quick and find 50 alums that will say the same. Coach? Parent? Board Member? Those are all a little more credible. In any case - like Mikey said - he is large guy that cant run 10 yards. He is an instant plug and play for them. He will have to work to transform himself just to compete on our D line.

Just my opinion, but with our current depth, other schools (UGA) are able to sell immediate PT. UGA is in dire need of defenders, especially fast ones. I believe Garner has his sites set on some specific kids. We have been pretty successful letting our play on Saturdays recruit for us. I think once we have guys getting Player of the Week awards and some Sportscenter highlights, that we will swing a few guys our way. It can be risky, but I am pretty confident our DL is going to go Beast Mode!!

I have to disagree a bit here. I think AU has gotten popular with the HS kids because we play an exciting, high scoring brand of football. Our defense, being completely honest, still is not where we need it to be. It is not like the defenses we enjoyed in the 1980's and for most of the 1990's. JMO, but our defense is middle of the pack in the SEC and has a ways to go before we can claim our D to be like UA's or LSU's.

I like some of our players a lot, esp. our DL, like last years 3 true freshman, CL, MA, and Daniels.I think we will continue to get better though and I like our DC and Garner, etc. (I think LB is our biggest issue right now)

Our defense has been bend, don't break. Hold them to a FG and we will score a TD.....When our D can shut down some good SEC offenses on 3 and outs is when AU will be favored to win chanmpionship after championship. OK, enough soapbox for Monday, sorry.

I kind of agree with both of you. Yes our D is middle of the pack and way down by past standards. However the game has changed O has so many advantages it is not fair to compare defenses from the past against defenses today. Even today when the Bama's and LSU's play top notch Spread O's they have issues. Yes we have some studs at D-Line but without better LB's we will not be beast mode. Like Mikey I believe without improved LB play we will always be I hope we can outscore you as opposed to we will stop you a few times. In today's game with our O a few key stops will actually let us beat teams badly but I don't think anybody expects to see anybody holding teams O's to scores like 3 or 7 or even 14 points as the game has been changed to help the O side of the ball to much. I am seeing some improvement on D side I hope we can turn the corner and become a solid D by today's standards but lets not try and compare to past as the game has changed.

Our DL was coming into it's own last year. We are adding more pieces, and the LB play as well as Secondary should be night and day. This is why I say that out D-Line play will recruit itself somewhat. If I am wrong I will say so, but I believe our D will be a strength this season.
