Espn preseason "power index"

9 SEC teams in the top 25.

Good to start the season that way but by the time the SEC teams finish mauling each other for 3 months, some of those 9 will drop out IMO...but the survivors will end up near the top like last season.

I'm intrigued by our low Special Teams ranking... Yea, 3 of our main ST players have graduated, but how do they know we aren't replacing them with equal talent? I guess I'm more bothered that bama's special teams are ranked higher.

I also think, a few games into the season, they will see that our offense shouldn't be outranked by Oregon and Florida State.

I'd love for Stat or someone better at stats than I am to look at the methods they use. I wish they'd describe them in more detail; but one thing they mention that stands out is number of returning starters. Makes sense. Wonder whether they use something like an experience index that would count for players who didn't start, but nevertheless played a lot.

Some other interesting things, I thought:

aTm ranked #10, and 3rd in the SECW, just behind USCe at #9 (#1 in the SECE). UGA #12, LSU #14. Subjectively, I'd have swapped aTm and LSU.

MSU #17, ahead of Ole Miss at #20. Not sure I agree with that.

8th in the nation is a low special teams ranking? Replacing both kickers and our top return man, I'd have expected them to put us lower.

5 teams on our schedule in the top 15... 8 in the top 50... not including an SEC Championship game, 1st round playoff game and a National Title game..

by the time we win the NC this year we will have played an entire regular season of top 50 opponents..

mind blown.

EDIT: that's as impressive as winning back to back titles, if you ask me.

It's low when Alabama is ranked 5th. Their punter was good (not Steven Clark good, but good), and he graduated. Other than that, how many field goals did they miss last year? I seem to recall their kicker getting death threats.

In the spring game, their punter was one of their back up QBs.

I see us ranked #19 on defense. I have always thought, with Malzahn's offense, all we need is a decent, top 25 defense and we would be essentially unstoppable. WDE!

(And yeah, I totally agree with those who question uat's high special teams ranking. If their special teams are that talented, then it must just be that Saban has no knowledge on how/when to use special teams...this year's Iron Bowl and their regular season loss to LSU in 2011 being prime examples.)

Oregon 2? :lmao:

They will choke against Stanford and some other team like they always do

Exactly...like getting thrashed by middling Arizona after two of their star players boasted to the media during game week that they were 'bigger than the Rose Bowl' with sights set on the BCS title game.

Oregon has been their own worst enemy, getting all the hype and blowing away the meager competition out only to fizzle out completely against the quality teams. They have been exposed the last few years and might find themselves falling out of the limelight soon.

Marcus Mariota (sp?) is a big reason for the hype. Very experienced QB returning. Also, they've tried to bolster their D with the last few recruiting classes. So, there is definitely reason to have them up there with Stanford and UCLA, IYAM.

I think this heavily weighs last year and tries to adjust based on NFL attrition and other factors.

Because of this, I think it is a generalization at best. With UAT losing offensive leader McCarren, defensive leader Mosely, and a raft of others, I think they are overrated as a potential top five team. Similarly, with aTm's losses, I think they are overrated as a potential top ten team. I am not sure why Mizzou dropped so much, but I do not know much about them.

What ESPN is saying, based on its own ranking system, is UAT's 2014 team (without AJ and C.J.) will be better than its 2013 team, and it saying the same thing for aTm without Johny and Mike.

But I do agree that AU, UAT, aTm, LSU, MSU, and Ole Miss all belong in the top 20. The SEC West will be very tough in 2014. Add to that AU has to play the two toughest teams in the SEC East, and it will be a challenge for AU.

I think their algorithm weights recruiting classes pretty heavily, too -- which explains a lot about why Bama gets rated highly despite their losses.

Aside: meh, if you took that photo from your profile at the SECCG, I was sitting not too far to your left.

It is all about their return man - Christian Jones. He is good and one of the better guys in the nation. Also, other than the Kick 6, their cover team is typically one of the best. Just dont ask them to kick anything outside a 15yd FG.

Yea, I agree. I am more nervous about special teams than anything else; new kicker and punter. No college experience. I am not so worried about our return capabilities. We have talented runners. I would like to feel better about our punt returner catching the ball. Whoever was fielding punts in the spring game dropped one with no one coming after him.
