Classic games dating back to 1960s will be televised on SEC Network

AUBURN, Alabama -- The SEC is expected to televise a "heavy dose" of classic games on its network when it launches in August.

The SEC managed to retain copyrights on games dating back to the 1960s when it signed 15-year deals with CBS and ESPN in 2008, SEC Network associate commissioner Charlie Hussey said Wednesday during an appearance on Head to Head Radio in Mississippi.

"We'll have a heavy dose of archived games and I think the fans love that, especially in the summer and leading up right there into the early fall," Hussey said. "It's something you'll see on the network."

The SEC Network will debut Aug. 14. Deals with AT&T U-Verse and Dish Network have been announced, though regional providers and DirecTV have yet to sign on. ESPN, which partnered with the SEC on the network, is leading negotations with regional and national providers.

The SEC will also launch a re-tooled website July 1, which will be powered by ESPN.

"We're going to take a lot of the best pieces of the ESPN.com site and you'll see some similarities with our conference website," Hussey said.

The conference will aggregate digital broadcasts produced by its 14 schools in one central hub at SECSports.com and SECNetwork.com. Schools have forfeited -- at a cost -- their digital rights to the SEC Network, allowing school-produced content to be streamed on the SEC Network's website and the watchESPN application. The SEC Network will broadcast at least 560 digital events in its first year, Hussey said.

"Authenticated" subscribers -- AT&T, Dish Network and Google Fiber -- will be allowed to watch the live and archived broadcasts on SECNetwork.com and the watchESPN application, Hussey said.

The SEC remains confident it will secure distributor deals with regional cable providers before launch.

augolf1615, I really like that old photo. Things surely have changed a lot since then. It had to be taken sometime before the mid 1950s, right?

Golf and I have surmised it was taken in the 40s or early 50s. It looked much like the photo my freshman year, 1957, with a some new stuff added by then. A press box had been added and a track around the field but the stands themselves looked the same in 1957 as they are in the photo. And yes, things have changed a great deal, not only the football field but the campus and the town of Auburn.

It might be nice to watch some old games but I will NOT change my provider just to get SEC NETWORK. I'd love to have it, don't get me wrong, even willing to pay more but I believe it should be available to all providers. I hope Charter gets it but it's not looking promising as of right now.

I expect that by August it will be looking a lot more promising. Not many providers took the Longhorn Network because its material was so limited, but that's not the case with the SEC Network.

Good point. I was watching the longhorn network the other night and they showed and old Okie/Texas game; and Okie won. Wasn't even close. I thought it odd them showing a loss.

yup, and the providers don't want to look too soft, too early since that gives SEC all the negotiating power. Networks will use it to ramp up the switch providers campaign, but in the end most of the big providers will probably be on board with the SEC network.
