Tips on Watching the World Cup

I notice a lot of fellow Americans have trouble relating to the World Cup, it seems to be a generational thing. Granted, many of you haven't played the sport but do have kids who play it. Here are some tips on watching the World Cup, its not as foreign as you think:

- Have a team that you support is not essential but it helps (the US team is pretty decent one to follow), but don't just limit watching just your team (that beats the purpose of the World Cup)

- Watch for different traits displayed by each country (sometimes the national culture comes through) - whether its Germany (disciplined attack and precision), Italy (strong defensive formations), Brazil (creative, dance and samba sytle of play), Spain (tiki taka or short passing movements), South Korea (martial arts influenced)

- The super stars are always fun to watch Leo Messi (Argentina), Ronaldo (Portugal) but also look for those new stars who emerge out of nowhere and pick your own favorites - some are great dribblers of the ball, some great long distance shooters, some great defenders, some superb midfielders or point guards and the the colorful goalkeepers

- Like march madness, watch the first round games because it builds up and you need to follow the stories to enjoy the ending. Remember the story started 2 years ago when 200 countries started the qualification rounds to get into the World Cup

- Many games will be a defensive struggle, but they will all have drama for 90 minutes.

- Most importantly unlike the Superbowl, March Madness, Stanley Cup and World Series, the World Cup is once in 4 years, these players get one chance to prove themselves at this global stage. So the intensity is end to end. Only a few special players get to represent their countries in multiple world cups. Whether you love the sport or not, get your feet wet now, its a great time to do that, after all the future marketplace is more global than you ever imagined and this is what global competition is about, where every country gets a legitimate shot at the title and the World Cup champs have clearly competed and beat out 200 + countries to win it..

Great post! The stories continue. Netherlands who lost to Spain in the finals four years ago routed Spain in their first game in the group. Chile just beat Spain 2-1 to put the World Champions out. For those that don't follow the sport too much Spain will still play one more game against Australia but it is meaningless. Another suggestion is to root for a team from a country of your ancestors. I am pulling for England and will pull for Germany after the Group stage until they play USA...

The excitement is building..probably the best World cup so far in terms goals, comebacks and upsets. US beating Ghana was the icing so far.

So much more to come yet, I am personally looking to see Leo Messi and his magic come through in the World Cup. The only 4 time World Footballer of the Year winner and it would be such a treat for all fans.

Love some of the new kids particularly Rahim Sterling (England), he was all over the place and he is only 19. John Brooks scoring the winner for US is only 22 and what about the Mexican goalkeeper last night against Brasil.

Ochoa is a known quantity. Excellent keeper.

How about Spain being eliminated before even playing their final game in the group stage. Not a good showing for the number one team in the world.

Watching Brazil play is a thing of beauty. The speed and fluidity they play with is amazing.

I don't think Brazil is the Brazil of old. Their defense is just not as strong. Mexico is another interesting story as they had to take the backdoor into the World Cup they were fourth in CONCAF behind USA, Costa Rica and Honduras and had to win a play in vs New Zealand to earn the trip.

Well just won $200 buck from by Brit fan next door. I told him they would not make the next round.

It's not 100% yet, though almost so. You might consider asking him if he wants to go double or nothing on the US team. I'd bet we DO make it to the next round.

True but its almost for sure. He called England players a bunch of %$#@%(*&^%%$$ millionaires. As for the US he loves it here and is pulling for them. He can't stand our coach

Ya Brazil actually looks weak atm and very easily could have two L's. Well by weak, I mean compared to what you usually expect from Brazil. Germany looks to be the class of the tourney atm.

Course he can't, cause our coach is German.

Here's another tip, though not so much for the World Cup. Start watching Barclays Premier League. It will keep the game fresh in your mind and you will learn more. I love watching their season and pull for Liverpool. YNWA!!
