Out indefinitely? Sign that he may need a medical hardship or not be able to rejoin the team?

Probably need more time to assess the damage. Either way, he's still on scholarship and will count I believe.

Normally, if they go on "medical scholarship" they are removed from the roster count, the sticker being that they cannot return to the team and play. You can't play a "now I'm in now I'm out" game with the medical status.

If he just takes a normal redshirt year, he will continue to count against the limit of 13.

Torn ACL = medical redshirt, right?

His first redshirt year is not a medical redshirt, regardless of the reason he's sitting out. If, after finishing his five years since signing he still has eligibility left he then applies for medical status for one of his non-playing years. In that case, he's applying back for medical status so he can have a sixth year. In no case will Wade be on medical redshirt this year, ACL or not.

If someone plays a few games in the first third of the season and then gets hurt with a season ending injury, they can apply for medical redshirt status and get that year back. Otherwise they lose the entire year for a few games. If they don't play at all play, they don't need a "medical redshirt".

Note, again, "medical redshirt" and "medical scholarship" are entirely different things. If a player comes off the roster and goes on medical scholarship, he's through playing at that school forever.

Sophomore Auburn basketball guard Dion Wade underwent successful knee surgery on Tuesday. Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure.

Wade injured his left knee in June during a basketball “training session” in his hometown of Antwerp, Belgium. There was no indication how long Wade will be out, but a full recovery is expected.

Remembering my research before one of my knee surgeries:

since c. 2003/04, over 80% of surgically repaired ACL tears in the U.S. with patient's under 30 yrs old, have resulted in a 105+% recovery rate to the repaired ACL within 2 years (using either cadavar or alternative tissue relocation).

So ya'll go out and get a new ACL, it will be better than the old one...
