Cut the Cord

Firstly...Mods feel free to move this thread if needed - Just looking for people that have done this and that may have any advice.

Ok, so I've decided to "cut the cord" on cable services. Just way too many other cheaper options out there for me to not do it. I'll still keep internet, but cutting cable alone drops my bill about $100 a month so it's very tempting. Trouble is, how will I watch Auburn football if it's not on CBS or ESPN3? This is the only thing holding me back. Also, what if I'm not home to watch it live? Is there a way to record it and watch it later? This season won't matter so much because I'll be deployed anyway, but if anyone has any experience with this, can you please shed some light on what the options may be? TIA

There are plenty of bootleg streams on the internet, but we're not allowed to link them in the forums.

But, you're running the risk of viruses and malware. Not to mention that it's shady.

I cut the cord. Youtube is my replacement for DVR. For watching games live, I go to my local Auburn Club watch parties or I meet up with other Auburn friends to watch together. I was only watching one or two games from home during the live broadcast per season, so I didn't find it to be a difficult thing to drop.

I "cut the cord" 18 months ago and shaved $140 off my bill. I kept the high speed internet and subscribed to Netflix & HULU Plus. Honestly, I don't want that much TV, I hardly ever use Netflix now. I put a quality antenna on my roof (not that big of a deal) to get all the OTA (over the air stations). ESPN and their grip on college football will be your biggest hurdle. But, if you are some what "network savy" you can stream the WATCH ESPN app to your TV.

I would HIGHLY RECCOMEND looking at a media server like Play-on, for additional content: http://www.playon.tv/?tid=t2014m09-b&utm_expid=24137620-43.ip2Mg5crRNia2iuZ-vHHrQ.1

They are actually having a good sale right now.

Good luck my friend and welcome to the movement.

This. Check the pinned topic here:

Internet / Radio options for AU football

I have never had any problems with viruses / malware (that I know of). Pop ups yes, but just a nuisance and 30 seconds or so and they are gone. You can find just about any game online live, and yes, youtube is great for replays if you can wait that long (I can't).

WDE!

I 'cut the cord' a couple of years ago. College football was really the only reason I was keeping a cable subscription anyway. The last 2 years, I've used bootleg streams and watched AU games on my computer. We recently moved and, in the process, I switched ISPs to Time Warner (thinking I could use Watch ESPN/ESPN3 to watch the AU games carried on ESPN). However, the times I've tried to watch streaming live sports events on WatchESPN, it won't let me - apparently because I do not have a Time Warner Cable TV account (just a Time Warner/Roadrunner internet account).

I put this out there as a warning to those who would be looking to do the same thing. I don't know if it's the same with other ISPs, but it appears to be the case with Time Warner. And I'm not paying $70/month (or more - it was ~$120/month when I cut it off) for a service that I pretty much only use for sports and has a bunch of junk I really don't want my kids watching.

I'm sure WATCHESPN requires all viewers to use a log in from a paying subscriber.

find a family member or friend that has a tv subscription that works with WATCHESPN and ask them if you can have thier login info, and just explain that you want it to use WATCHESPN to watch Football games. I was going to do this but now DirecTV is not listed for WATCHESPN. So I need to find someone that has a subscription that works with WATCHESPN.

Also I have a website that you can watch ANY sporting event. PPV Boxing, UFC, College Football games. Network games, etc... PM me for details if you want more info. I have to explain how to use site so you don't get malware or anything like that. Quality isn't great and need good internet speed.

I have a laptop connected to my TV and watch games this way thru website I use. I did also use WATCHESPN in the past, but won't be able to this year. Unless I find someone to share login info. Also youtube like everyone else said for watch later.

I may try that PlayOn but still doesn't help with WatchESPN. >:(

The stranglehold the cable companies have over networks is aggravating. I hate that you have to have cable service to be able to watch ESPN services. I would be content if ESPN would do a $8-$10/ month charge to watch their stuff online. I would never wish for cable again. I have basic cable (local channels) right now so I can at least watch the games on replay on ESPN3. It was frustrating last year to miss live games. I would actually listen to radio live and watch replay on sunday. (if we won of course, which was a lot last year)

^^THIS. ESPN requires a cable subscription to utilize their WatchESPN.com and WatchESPN apps.

I believe part of the agreement for ESPN charging cable companies through the nose for their channels is they will not offer it through any other venue. BUT, I also read recently that ESPN is researching some sort of online packages. I believe they are going to offer a soccer one soon. Also, the NFL has considered offering a Sunday Ticket option through Amazon. I did the Amazon Prime promotion last year when you purchased Madden 25, it was great. Watch the network games OTA on the TV and have NFL Sunday Ticket on the iPad going.

So even if I have internet through my cable company, I won't be able to get ESPN3 because I don't pay for cable? I guess that makes sense, I just didn't think it was like that.

No, you have to have the TV subscription associated to your user name/password.

So Sunday Ticket is available through Amazon Prime? I've got a PS3 so I can stream... how did I not know this?!?!

Yes, the part through PS3, but the Amazon Prime was just last year. But the bad news is the proposed AT&T purchase of DirectTV has everything in a holding pattern right now. No one knows for sure what is going to happen for 2014.

Well being deployed will make it a bit harder. If your home is anywhere near a good venue such as buffalo wild wings or other such establishments. you could watch it there.

This. I didn't know "cutting the cord" was a thing but I haven't had cable or satellite for 4 years and have never missed a game. I've done it by being social. I either meet up at a sports bar, or sports restaurant or friend's watching party or just go to the game in Auburn. Not only has it saved me money on my cable bill but it also has improved my sports watching experience because I literally don't have the option to watch alone.
