It's being reported on al.com that Mr. Penny has passed away. I can't attach the article, but it is on the front page. Sad, if true. His wife said his health has been declining in recent months.

Johnny Richmond, Tigers superfan known as Mr. Penny and beloved by the Auburn community, passes away

AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn University superfan Johnny Richmond, known to many as Mr. Penny, passed away on Wednesday night at his home, according to the Opelika Auburn News.

Richmond, a custodian and crossing guard at Dean Road Elementary, was beloved in the Auburn community and known for celebrating Tigers touchdowns by doing pushup in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The cause of death has not been released, but Richmond's wife, Lula, said his health had been declining for months. In 2012, Richmond suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He later said he survived the incident thanks to God and was grateful to be alive ,reports WSFA.

He was always fun at games when I was a student. He was usually standing in the walkway between the lower bowl and upper bowl near the band, and we would usually sit on the first row above the walk way. He'd dance, wave his signs, smile, and high five people all game.

It's just a sad time revisited. Many of us thought he'd pass after the incident but he actually improved a bit for awhile.

This is exactly as I remember him during student teaching days at Dean Road. God used him to touch a lot of lives...kids of all ages...and he will be sorely missed.
