Frost is entering his fourth year at AU and McKinzy his third. It's past time... Deshaun Davis is now entering his second season after his injury and should be ready to go. Tre Williams was our most outstanding recruit at LB in several years. Those two will be playing a significant amount if the returners don't improve their games by leaps and bounds. That was very sensible. I share most of your sentiments. I believe we will see them move to the next level because we have never seen them play in year 2 of the same defense. The place to watch is boundary safety. Why do i say that?...... Here is why..... The 3-4 and 4-3 are 7 man front defenses. Meaning the offense has to account for 7 defenders at the line of scrimmage. These are base gap responsibilities in the 4-3 However we run a 6 man front in the 4-2-5 The Sam Line backer is now a Hybrid that needs to provide run support and provide coverage skills to the field side(wide side). He needs to be big like an OLB but able to play zone or press man like a DB. His role is DB coverage with run support outside. The Boundary safety does not have to be quite as fast but need to be a bit bigger. We did not have this guy last year but we do now in Derrick Moncrief. He has to provide the run support opposite of the Star/Spur/ Hybrid player and this defense is now a disguised 4-4 or 8 man front against the run. the Corners and the Field safety play a cover 3 shell over the top and do not worry about run support. As a football player if you do not quite trust that your guy will be there, you will try to over compensate. Most traditional defenses put there best run support safety on the " strong" or stacked side of the offense. They refer to them as the strong safety. I am a sunshine pumper of epic levels, however, I don't think it's unwarranted to be very excited about our LB position this year. McKinzy quietly had a great season last year. He didn't make a ton of incredible plays but he was probably our most sure tackler in the back 7 and seemed to be decent in coverage. With the switch of positions to a more natural fit for both LBs this year AND it being year 2 in a system that leans on LBs to make a lot of calls, I think we witness a great year from our LBs.
