"War Eagle!" Etiquette?

I am not a fan of people saying WAR EAGLE to people just because they are wearing different colors. (ex. uga and turd fans) If you are addressed first by someone saying "go dawgs",etc... then I feel it is ok to say WAR EAGLE in response. Outside of that it seems appropriate to say WAR EAGLE anytime you notice a fellow Auburn family member.

Most definitely.

Something that annoys me is people saying War Damn... <_<

Uh, hello, if you want to insert damn then finish the damn phrase. I guess some people think another word might take years off their life?

War Eagle / War Damn Eagle ;)

Is there ever a time or occasion where it's considered bad form or insensitive to yell out "War Eagle"?

(I ask because to me it's an affirmative statement that takes the place of so many other lame expressions that just don't get the job done.)

Agreed. BTW, I see nothing wrong with a pastor saying War Eagle during his eulogy for a fallen Auburn man.

YES! This is the proper etiquette. I see bama tourists decked out in their gear all the time in S.A. I just snicker because they look like idiots. The last thing I want is to give them any more attention because that's all they want.

Its more for fans, alum rather than a show off loud mouth sports fan.

War Eagle.

I even thought of a hand signal for "War Eagle" that could be used for instance if you were a distance away and you wanted to acknowledge another Auburn person.

You could hold up the three middle fingers of the right hand pointing straight up. Looks like a "W". Then rotate the three fingers so they are pointing toward your left side.

To the other person it would look like an "E". So.... the "W" "E" would be short for "War Eagle". I don't know how you would ever get it started but it would be a great "insider" signal to each other that would drive the onlookers crazy!

Do that around the wrong people and you might find yourself in trouble.

lol right.

On K-State gameday I stopped at Chick-fil-A for lunch- in gameday attire, of course- and had a Gump walk by my table. He said "R*&^ T*$#", and I grinned in acknowledgement. Not satisfied, he responded "that's where you're supposed to say...", and made hand motions to prompt me to finish the sentence. I replied "only to Auburn fans."

Since I left Alabama in 2002, I have used "war eagle" to greet anyone wearing Auburn gear. This has gotten a couple of dumbfounded, blank stares in Oklahoma. I guess some people just buy AU hats because they look good.

But... But... You're supposed to care more about what that other school's fan base thinks than you do about Auburn. /s

Well played!

I hope I can remember this next time I have it happen to me.

Absolutely! For example....when your mother in law stomps out of the house angry at you and says she's never coming back, yelling "War Eagle!" in an exclamation of joy to your wife would be bad form. Or when your buddy is lining up for a putt that's the difference between winning and losing a 500 dollar bet, yellling "War Eagle!" just as he begins his stroke might not be appreciated. Etc. etc. :big:

I actually think my wife would be the one yelling "WAR EAGLE" if the her mother got mad and left. Those may be inappropriate by some but I think they're AUsome!

I use it to greet people I don't know in odd situtions. Examples in just the last few weeks; a couple in AU tee shirts at the Minnesota state fair and a young lady in a AU cap in the Sacramenta airport. Never fails to get a warm smile and a War Eagle back.

Yep, just ask Leo DiCaprio, the biggest AU fan...who isn't actually an AU fan. :)

That is something I don't get. Why but gear from a particular team just because you think it looks cool?

Would that be like "and the horse you rode in on"

More like, "oh, it's like that? Let me get my gun"

You never know what it might mean in some other country. In Brazil it is considered vulgar just to show the "OK" sign with the thumb and forefinger making a circle.

So true! I worked in Brazil for 14 months. I didn't know any Portuguese when I arrived. I remember flashing the OK sign and quickly remembering it's negative connotation there. Talk about making a quick recovery! Had to break that habit real quick. Thumbs up is their version of OK. It was my "go to" affirmation while I learned my way around. Funny enough, I still use that all the time now and it's been 4 years.

I normally only say War Eagle as a cheer, or to a fellow Auburn fan. I will say it to an opposing fan when they have acknowledged their team "go dawgs" in a friendly way. If it is done as a taunt, I completely ignore them. Any bama fan that says rt is always ignored. I hate any team cheer/chant being yelled at an event that has nothing to do with football. Its so bammerish and always makes me smh.

When I started at Auburn I brought my grandparents AU gear, and they wore it proudly, despite not being Auburn or college sports fans at all. They still have the shirts and wear them, but if you gave them a war Eagle they would certainly stare blankly.

You have to be careful with body language outside the US as its different everywhere. As in your thumbs up is considered giving someone the finger in other countries. Also in Germany and a few other countries a thumb up gets you one more beer, where the pointer finger we use as the #1 gives you 2 beers.

I don't think I have ever "yelled" it outside of a football game.

But I use and receive it as a greeting, mostly receive it since I am in SC. I often wear an AU cap and get a war eagle occasionally. I enjoy it most from unlikely sources, typically old(er) people. I was leaving a restaurant with my wife the other day while a a group of older ladies coming in and one of them gave me a war eagle.

Ha that's funny. Have to remember that one. I can only imagine the confusion going through his mind after that.

War Eagle is warm greeting or a sincere goodbye. It is a positive supportive exclamation for Auburn people.

The cult uses their whatever it is to slander, as an insult, to degrade, taunt, direct attention to themselves.

They can't keep their head a hole from saying it at any time. Sad thing is when other people try to use it against us they themselves have become

just as ignorant and foolish as the cult.
