Liberia to Prosecute Man Who Brought Ebola to United States

Authorities in Liberia said Thursday that they plan to prosecute the U.S. Ebola patient because he allegedly lied on an airport health questionnaire.

Passengers leaving Liberia are being screened for fever and are asked whether they have had contact with anyone infected with Ebola. Thomas Eric Duncan, who was diagnosed with Ebola in Dallas after flying from Liberia last month, answered “no,” according to a copy of his form obtained by The Associated Press.

Neighbors have said that Duncan helped a sick pregnant woman who later died of the disease. Binyah Kesselly, chairman of the board of directors of the Liberia Airport Authority, told reporters Thursday that Duncan will be prosecuted when he returns to Liberia.

“The fact that he knew and left the country is unpardonable, quite frankly,” President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf told the Canadian network CBC. “I just hope that nobody else gets infected. Fortunately, he’s in the United States, where medical care, you know, is very good.”

When Duncan returns to Liberia, she said, “Then we’ll have to deal with him.”

According to my sister, the guy with it lives in her neighborhood, this hospital is a couple miles down the street. She is on a hospital administration board so she knows whats being done, she isn't worried about it. In fact she is making fun of her husband for flipping out so bad.

If she were on the plane with him or her kids went to school with children from the house where he stayed starting on sept 20, she might be more concerned.

Actually some were

And if everyone would educate themselves on Ebola, they would be less concerned. Ebola is not contagious before it becomes symptomatic. The Nigerian patient was not symptomatic on the plane, so no one on the plane was at risk. The children who came in contact with him after his symptoms occur were non-symptomatic when they attend school (And apparently still are, as of the linked article*), so no one at the schools was at risk. Sounds to me like your sister is the educated one in her family when it comes to Ebola.
*Five students at four different schools came into contact with the man, Dallas Superintendent Mike Miles added, but none has exhibited symptoms of the deadly virus. The children are being monitored at home, and the schools they attended remain open, Miles said.

Education is the best tool in fighting the spread of any disease. I am reminded of the early days when Aids/HIV first entered the national dialogue. I had some students who were absolutely convinced that only homosexuals were passing the virus sexually, and they had no concern whatsoever about the unsafe heterosexual promiscuity they practiced. But they were appalled by the idea that someone who was HIV-positive might sit next to them in class. ...panicking over the wrong things and ignoring the proper things due to ignorance.

The best strategy for combating Ebola right now is educating the populous and fast-tracking the pursuit of a vaccine.

[And of course, it would be wonderful if medical research can eventually discover an anti-viral drug that can be the "silver bullet" against almost all viruses in the way antibiotics have traditionally overcome almost most bacteria!]

While a person who has been around an Ebola victim may not have the virus or show any symptoms, could the infected person on the airplane or the child that went to school have contaminated clothing from living with Ebola victims? Ebola has been transmitted by contaminated bedding. What about clothing?

The family in Dallas was order to stay in their apartment on Tuesday, They left and also allowed one child to go to school on Wednesday. They have been forced into quarantine under police guard for 21 days. Part of the problem with the disease in West Africa is that many people will not or cannot follow precautions to stay away from sick people or keep sick people quarantined. The family in Dallas and their visitor from Liberia also failed to follow quarantine procedures. This person from Liberia knew he had been in physical contact from a person dying from Ebola and he lied to get out of Liberia and into the US. Lying probably will save his life as he most likely will survive in a US hospital.

One of the five Dallas ISD students who had contact with an Ebola patient attended Tasby Middle School part of the day on Wednesday, before going home, district officials said.

Dallas ISD had said that the five students were not in school Wednesday.

“We just got new information, something that we might not have known,” said DISD spokesman André Riley on Thursday.

Riley was not certain how long the student was in school Wednesday. But he said it was the “early part of the day.”

The impacted students attend Conrad High School, Tasby Middle School, and Hotchkiss and Rogers elementary schools. They have been removed from the school for three weeks. The virus has a 21-day incubation period.

Riley reiterated that none of the five students have shown any symptoms of having the virus.

Zachary Thompson, director of Dallas County health and Human Services, said the family was notified Tuesday about the need to keep the students home.

“Everybody was aware. Maybe he took it upon himself to go to school,” Thompson said.

More to come…

More information from DISD Spokesman Jon Dahlander:

“Regarding the Tasby student who showed up for school yesterday: please note that we believe all 5 of the students attended school Monday and Tuesday. None of them showed any symptoms and were therefore not contagious.”

“We’re not sure why the Tasby student showed up for school on Wednesday but, once he was identified, he was asked to go to the Nurse’s office so that a parent could be contacted. During the limited time he was on campus, he showed no symptoms yesterday either.”

"I recognize there are competing interests in their rights to freedom and the overarching public concern,” Jenkins said, adding that the residents did not comply with an earlier request to stay home.

Mayor Mike Rawlings said city officials are working to ensure those living in the Vickery Meadow area are educated on the Ebola case. Dallas police officers have also been stationed in the area to allow the CDC to do its work without interruption.

“What we’re trying to do at the city is to make sure we create a calm and safe environment for these people to do their work," Rawlings said.

Meanwhile the list of schools where students were affected by the Ebola scare grew to include Richardson ISD.

Tim Clark, spokesman for the district, says the district was notified Thursday by Dallas County health officials that three students at Wallace Elementary "potentially had contact with the Ebola patient."

Dallas County health officials asked RISD officials to pull them from class and check them for symptoms. They had none.

"They are healthy," Clark said.

Nevertheless, they were held until they could be interviewed by Dallas County, which asked them to "be excluded from school so they could be monitored."

Attendance at a handful of Dallas ISD campuses attended by the patient's relatives was down 10 percent Thursday as worried parents kept their children home.

At the northeast Dallas apartment where Duncan's family lives, Texas health officials are hiring a cleaning company to sanitize the home where an Ebola patient was living until he was hospitalized Sunday.

Five children and an unknown number of adults were living in the unit at The Ivy Apartments in northeast Dallas at the time.

Four of them are being monitored for Ebola symptoms, though none have shown any, and were orderedWednesday night by state officials to remain at home and not have visitors.

Duncan, 42, began showing symptoms of the disease a week ago and was hospitalized Sunday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.

Of greatest concern is that any bodily fluids he left behind could infect someone living in the house.

Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the state health department, said he was concerned about the hygiene level of the apartment.

"The housing conditions need to be improved," he said Thursday during a teleconference organized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "We have worked to identify an entity for doing the cleaning."

Various cleaning companies were contacted, but only one agreed to go inside the apartment, he said. The company was not identified.

Lakey said the Dallas County health department bagged up the man's belongings and bedding that might have become infected during his illness.
