macauburn 6
Let's hear it for Carlson, He nailed the field goals in the LSU game. Plus, the points came at opportune times. Auburn is lucky we have him. He came all the way to Auburn from Colorado. He is going to win some games for us. His kick offs were great too!!! They were seldom run out of the end zone. cooltigger21 0
I'd like to see the Australian punter step up and take over that job. Save Daniels for the fg and kickoffs.
WFE12 8,222
The SEC honored Daniel Carlson for the second time this season Monday when it named him its special teams player of the week after he helped Auburn beat LSU 41-7 last Saturday. Carlson hit a career-best 46-yard field goal early and hit a 42-yarder in the second half. He averaged 40.7 yards on three punts and five of seven kickoffs were touchbacks. He also received recognition from the College Football Performance Awards as one of the national specialists of the week. Nick Marshall was named one of Performance Awards' top quarterback performers as well. The SEC named Carlson its freshman of the week after Auburn's season-opening win over Arkansas. Carlson averaged 53.3 yards per punt in that game, kicked a 45-yard field goal and watched seven of his kickoffs go for touchbacks. Auburn's other weekly winners this season are Quan Bray, special teams player of the week; and Josh Holsey, defensive player of the week. http://www.auburntigers.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/100614aan.html
auburn4ever 1,266
I think Daniel is doing really good job. I hope the coaches and fans will give Matthew Shiel time, he'll turn out to be a great punter for us. Has there bee an word if Tyler Stovall Hokes Bluff will see any playing time this year? I really hope he gets a fair chance. Edited October 7, 2014 by auburn4ever
aucanucktiger 1,526
There's no such thing as "wearing out a leg". Ever heard of soccer? The downside to him punting and kicking is analogous to demanding an athlete bounce back & forth between baseball & softball or tennis & raquetball every few minutes. Same basic muscles but the technique on one can mess up your technique on the other. Special teams are ideal when they have specialists doing one skill set. BornAU76 232
He's been outstanding all around and I'm glad he's getting the recognition from the SEC media, he truly deserves it. Ask Bama if they think a sound kicking game is important...
hikerdns 46
Ask Bama if they think a sound kicking game is important... Speaking of..... Quick story on the Carlson. Told to me by my grandfather who knows Carlson's grandfather. Carlson's grandfather is/was a fairly well known baseball ball player at Bama. Lots of Bama grads in his family. So of course Carlson's grandfather wanted his grandson to play at the ole' university. With his pull, he got him on a recruitment visit. As the story goes he kicked for them, but the staff was less than cordial and offered no scholarship. The grandfather wasnt thrilled by this interaction. So a little while latter Carlson takes a visit to Auburn, kicks, and is offered a scholarship right then. So go back to the Iron Bowl, :01 sec left . Saban decides to put in his freshman kicker with the bigger leg - comes up short and you know what happens. But what if they'd offered the scholarship to Carlson, who supposedly has a big leg. Would he had made it? Either way, I bet the grandfather liked the way Bama got beat, thinking "Yall shouldnt have spurned my grandshon and maybe that kick would've gone in" You better believe Saban thinks about this every time he sends out his FG kicker.
