DKW 86 6,398
http://time.com/2934500/1-in-5%E2%80%82campus-sexual-assault-statistic/ From Time Magazine: In other words, this survey classified sexual encounters that occurred while the woman was intoxicated as a form of sexual assault, regardless of whether the perpetrator was responsible for her intoxication or she consumed the substances on her own. “Proponents [of the 1/5 statistic] are exaggerating the threat, too often confusing regretful sexual decisions made while under the influence of alcohol or drugs with actual rape,” Sabrina Schaeffer, executive director of IWF, wrote in a statement circulated before the panel. “If sexual intimacy under the influence of alcohol is by definition assault, then I would say a significant percentage of sexual intercourse throughout the world and down the ages would qualify as a crime,” Sommers said. (Sommers wrote an article for TIME in May 2014 about the “panic” she sees surrounding this issue.) The response rate for this survey was 80% to 88%; double that of the 2007 survey, and the results showed an annual rate of sexual assault against female students to be six per one thousand, which translates to about one in forty over four years. This means that 2.5% of women are sexually assaulted in college, not 20%. It is worth pointing out that the figures in the Bureau of Judicial Statistics survey are at least 12 years old. “Sexual assault on campus is a genuine problem,” said Sommers. “But to get smart solutions, inflated statistics are not the answer.”
icanthearyou 3,345
Ever been to a Frat party? Ever been to a bar in a college town and watched groups of males target drunken females the way lions pick out the weakest gazelle? Have you ever seen a drunken, young girl get taken into a dormitory, get gang raped, and then be left in an elevator with a coke bottle shoved into her vagina? Ever seen a distraught young girl eating lunch all alone in a college cafeteria and suddenly, six members of the football team run in with ski masks on, and hit her in the face with pies because she had reported them for raping her? "But to get smart solutions, inflated statistics are not the answer.” True but, attempting to totally dismiss the problem in any manner is even more ridiculous. To make the statement that the statistics are inflated and then propose that most of the assaults are never reported is just stupid. I wonder, what is the real agenda behind this article? Preying upon the weak is despicable. There is no justification.
DKW 86 6,398
And creating a bogus survey answered by only 40 odd percent of the respondents means that the results are skewed badly. The results are 8X the actual results vs the 2005 poll.
WarTim 3,192
Rape can NEVER be glossed over. Should always be prosecuted. Girls should also be taught not to put themselves in situations where bad things can happen. Safety in numbers and even safer if you are not drunk. Just sayin'... autigeremt 5,681
Typical stats from a group looking for some flames to fire up. Sad thing is there's no need to flame up something as despicable as rape.
AURaptor 1,113
Lena Dunham, fake fraternity rape stories in Rolling Stone, and now this... Anyone seeing a pattern here ? To promote an agenda, valid and real on its own, but over stating the issue, to generate even more hype, more " awareness " , never mind the actual facts.
