This summer, Zach Phelps-Roper could be seen on the streets of Topeka, Kansas, holding a sign above his head bearing the words, “You are beautiful.” He was picketing the Westboro Baptist Church, arguably the most reviled religious organization in the country. “Please forgive them,” he could be heard shouting, “for they know not what they do!”

Not long ago, Zach, 23, was holding an entirely different kind of picket sign. He is the grandson of the late Fred Phelps, Westboro’s founder and spiritual leader. Phelps shaped the church’s extreme zealotry and brazenly offensive anti-gay pickets, especially those staged at military funerals, where congregants of the church hold signs that read “God Hates gays” and “Pray for More Dead Soldiers.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has branded the church “the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America.” The media often refers to it as a cult...

Haven't read the article yet, but I'm about to.

There was a lot of drama in the church around the time Fred Phelps died. The one leading the church now is, by some accounts, worse than Fred Phelps. Rumor has it the a little empathy crept into his heart, and for that, he was excommunicated.

This church shows you how people can head to Syria and join ISIS. Hard to understand, but shows people are crazy enough to believe anything to feel important.

They are less a church than they are a band of parasitic shysters using the First Amendment to pilfer a healthy living out of the courts- by provoking people into attacking them or infringing on their right to peacefully assemble. Most if not all of them are lawyers, and I'd bet dollars to donuts that none of them actually believe the filth they peddle. If folks ever got smart to their ways and stopped paying attention to them, we'd probably never hear from them again, as their funding source would have dried up.

They're not talented enough actors to not believe in that stuff. They'd never publicly trash their own patriarch if they weren't overt zealots.

Problem is, they keep showing up and instigating incidents. It's not possible for folks to ignore them. And they know it.
