NBA players union wants to remove age limit

A big surprise to me...thought the union was on the other side of the issue...but it's the owners who like the rule for the obvious reason that it gives them a year to watch the prospects against some pretty good competition rather than make a hiring decision while the kid is still in HS.

Very odd indeed. The players have been adamant about this. It really doesn't affect the owners that much. They aren't tying up a big pile of money in rookies. It's really the best thing. Let the best go on and do their thing and then that will help the college game.

Affect on the owners is that the risk associated with signing some kid out of HS is infinitely higher than letting the guy play a year in the ACC or SEC against good talent.

These kids play against each other in AAU for two or three years before they finish HS. The rest of the talent is not NBA caliber do that doesn't give you any greater the indicator. The ones that will go straight from HS aren't going to benefit that much more from one year of college ball. There's probably less than 5 in average any one year that are going to attempt that transition.

Gotta think a year under a coach K or Calipari....and in the physical training program at those schools is worth a lot to the NBA....and costs them nothing.

We have seen how many of those so-called 5* "one and done" prospects turn out to be missing some key elements of the game. These were/are kids that would have probably signed for pretty large bonuses if a baseball style draft system were in place. One year of college does a pretty good job of identifying the guys who really do have the ability to play in the NBA their first year out of college.

BUT...it is interesting how the sides seemed to have changed positions on this issue. I think it's a done deal and by the class of 2016, HS kids will be drafted by the NBA. JMO

there have been some that really considered it, then went to college and bombed out. one from bama, hendrix i think. played 4 years and still didnt make nba. for the most part you are correct. most of the ones who go are successful.

That could be but...these young guys are coming in and putting some veterans on the bench too. Like NFL it's a league of short careers for the most part.

What's getting watered down is college basketball where we don't see the better players developing over 3 or 4 years. Transfers, JuCos and "one and done".....many schools find themselves starting almost from scratch every season to put together a team.

And considering that NCAA is thinking to make student-athletes actually go to class, take real classes, etc. (See Syracuse, UNC-CH) more kids might opt for the NBA if they had the opportunity...like young baseball players do.

The only problem with making a rule that players in HS must be one year out, or 20 years old, or anything of that nature is that the overseas leagues won't track with the NBA, and will allow these young players to play there until they satisfy the reqs for the NBA. Pro basketball with the elite of the elite will never happen again.

when I first learned about the headline before reading the facts, I was thinking about exacly the same thing. Never thought it is actually quite a controversial thing that also involves some racially biased issues.
