American Millennials Have Dismal Math and Reading Scores

U.S. millennials, defined as people 16 to 34 years old, were supposed to be different. They’re digital natives. They get it. High achievement is part of their makeup. But the ETS study found signs of trouble, with its authors warning that the nation was at a crossroads: “We can decide to accept the current levels of mediocrity and inequality or we can decide to address the skills challenge head on.”

Can't fail kids anymore because it might make them upset. But, you can just pass them on through and create a generation of underachieving iPad and Twitter zombies who can't even open a can of soup without youtubing an instructional video.

The really sad thing is that despite all the gizmos and gadgets they have, millennials lag behind in the tech category as well. They've been taught all about everything under the sun as far as social justice and the rest of this multicultural rotgut but woefully undertaught in the things they need to actually get ahead or even survive in the real world. That doesn't even take into account the idiocy of common core math.

IMHO, we have a "one size fits all" mentality when it comes to education. We cling to our broad based, generalized form of education in a world that has moved dramatically towards specialization.

I think we need to identify interests and aptitudes earlier and provide avenues of education that are specifically designed for specific goals.

That is exactly what the problem, is, HOWEVER, we have a whole portion of the public that is brainwashed into opposing anything but basic educational spending.

If we could afford it, we would be out of public education for good.
