A Kappa Sig at Maryland

Is in trouble now due to people finding a email that was made over a year ago and sent to 6 of his friends. It has racist comments, it has sexist comments. I will use this link since it contains the actual alleged email:

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/kappa-sigma-maryland-racist-email

Question is after reading the email, while I highly disprove of it and disagree with the content, is it a reflection of culture in today's youth? A culture and influence that does include rap music as a major contributor. As the email really doesn't read any different than many lyrics. So why should this individual be punished/labeled for a email, when society itself accepts the same type of comments as mainstream art.

The sex comments are easy to point out and see the comparison between the email and the art.

The following links contain adult language and content in written format.

The use of non-consent in the email and the art is easy to compare:

http://uproxx.com/smokingsection/2013/04/50-absurd-rape-lyrics/#page/2

The comparison of racist terminology and stereotyping is also easy to compare. Especially in reference to Asians:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/hnigatu/dumb-rap-lyrics-about-asian-people#.kyZ1b3oEl

So now if universities are going to take literature written by students and use it against them in a judgmental manner, then should similar material be outlawed or bring about punishment?

So if one lives in a dorm, then music with comparable lyrics shouldn't be allowed. Videos of a sexist nature or theme shouldn't be allowed.

Is it fair for universities to start hunting down and punishing these individuals when their statements/literature is a reflection of art that is accepted in normal society?

1. Who the hell talks like this anyways?

2. What an idiot.

3. Why would anyone even feel the need to send an e-mail like this ?

4. How'd this become public in the first place ? I mean, unless it's a university e-mail, I don't get why or how it would be anyone else's concern.

5. Fine young men they've got there at Kappa Sig. Geeze.

1) Lot of kids do surprisingly.

2) I'd agree

3) Why do people send alot of stuff lol. Given the first sentence of the email, I'm guessing drunk.

4) No clue. All the stories just say it appeared on social media.

5) It was one individual not the entire fraternity.

Regardless I don't see how the President of the university can say this when I would guess that forms of art played daily in dorms, cars, headphones, and openly at tailgates on campus expressing similar views is tolerated:

"The vulgar language in the email expresses views that are reprehensible to our campus community," Loh wrote. "We immediately met with the individual involved and a University investigation is underway."

Regardless of the rush shirt let's get rachet as f*** during rush week. My d**k will be sucked and f***ed in compound basement whether you guys like it or not. Don't invite any n****r gals or curry monsters or slanted eye chinks, unless they're hot. Ziggy you're [sic] girl can come she's cool. Remember my n***as, erect, assert, and insert, and above all else, f*** consent ... d**ks untouched.

Apparently, there's some ' shirt ' ? Which indicates being sober, civil or some such. In contrast , the writer seems to indicate he's going to buck the system, and do what ever..

I swear, I was 19 once, and saw a great deal of stupid stuff done, said, etc... lotta poor choices made, to be sure.

And 'Rush '... we talkin' fraternity rush ? Or little sister rush ? I was under the impression they no longer even had little sisters... but either way, it sounds more like he's gearing up for spring break than any sort of formal fraternity function.

I was never that immature. I saw plenty of it, but not in an email or in writing. Stupidity + immaturity = disaster.

I'm still baffled as to why anyone would feel the need to compose and then send such a message.

And then there's the issue of how it got to be posted on social media... so who decided to deep six their own frat ?

It really is mind bottling as to how stupid some kids can be, given as they have grown UP in a world of e-mails and selfies.

LMFAO. It's rap's fault....

Let's here your thoughts then on the subject and the question I'm asking.

Is it fair for universities to track down students private comments and punish them for said comments when forms of what individuals call art (be it music or porn) of similar nature are allowed freely on campus?

Yes? No? Why?

Do you disagree with research such as the following (and many more can easily be found), that looks at the influences and perceptions that occur in society based off of the genre and can you provide the scientific evidence to disprove the findings?

http://www.studentpu...gynistic-lyrics

Take rap out of it you want. Let's use porn. Wouldn't watching porn in the dorm room that is based off of a non-consent theme be as "reprehensible to the campus community" as a private email? Far as I know universities can do nothing to you for watching pornographic material in your dorm room (unless it is underage).

The content of the email references rush week, when students pledge fraternities and sororities. The email's author tells the six recipients to ban certain ethnic groups from the fraternity's parties using racial slurs and sexually aggressive language. At one point in the email, the author also denounces consent for sexual activity.

Kappa Sigma fraternity acknowledged in a statement posted on its website Friday that the student was an undergraduate and member of the University of Maryland chapter when he sent the email. The fraternity said it suspended the student after learning about the email and that he has since resigned. Kappa Sigma says the Maryland chapter is still working to formally expel him from the fraternity.

As reprehensible as his comments were, I still see no reason for the University to take any action. Unless there's a pattern of misconduct ,and this e-mail supports some on going problem, I really see no crime here.

The story also claims the author tells the recipients to " ban certain ethnic groups from the fraternity's parties " ...is false.

He said don't invite them, unless they're hot.

Anyone remember the slogan " No fat chicks " ? Yes , cruel and insensitive, but hardly grounds for being expelled. Or is it ?

I'll definitely defend it. It's no worse than any other genre of music. And I could sing those horrible things that was said in the op that doesn't mean after I harmonize it you can blame r&b. I could scream it, that doesn't mean you can blame rock and roll....

Rap music has less to do with this story than it did with the OU frat song.

Which was zero.

"and if it's not a rapper I can make it as, I'll be a ****in rapist in a jason mask" ~Eminem

"Tryin' to send the bitch back to her maker, And if you got a daughter older then 15, I'mma rape her" ~DMX

"Night time is the right time for creepin, Vandalize your crib, rape your wife while she's sleepin" ....sigh.. ~DMX again

"dont you know my n*ggaz kidnap kids.. **** em in they a** throw them over the bridge" ~BIGGIE

Just figured I'd throw up a few that came to mind, and of course rap lyrics tell people how to act and what to believe.

That's why I know when I die I'll see you at the crossroads, and also how I'm sure that any girl named Brenda has a baby, but also barely has a brain.... and can probably hardly spell her name.

Also, Kanye talks to Jesus on his cell phone.... though I'm sure it was just to ask him why his lyrics suck so bad. :)

do we need to start quoting song lyrics to see which genre promotes the most violence? I am sure i'll win that war. For the record i am not using rap to justify any other wrongs and all rap is not bad. Some of it is plain horrible.

The old saying garbage in garbage out. If you listen to trash music and watch trash television or look at porn, you are going to have a mind filled with trash and you'll think and act accordingly.

I agree, trash comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms. "this is why I'm hot" Mims needs to figure that out.

...Well, considering my entire post was sarcastic:)

I really didn't think it was hard to see the sarcasm either, but with some of the other posters here I can see now why you all would take what I wrote seriously.

We can start quoting and we both could go all day....thing about it is rap is younger. Rock been around much longer did you complain about it? Quite simple some stuff is good and some is bad like in ALL things. Funny thing is people used Kanye as an example and he doesn't rap about violence at all.....you can try to degrade rap and not other music but you wouldn't win that argument

Oh no, I use Kanye only to show how horrible Kanye is.

And that using the logic of "rap made me do it/believe in it" is how I know Jesus and Kanye speak to each other on cell phones.

Lol, nobody wants to answer the questions.

And of course the most popular music genre at a time period has no influence on anything.

Lol man could you imagine if the grunge and goth movement of the 90's had influenced individuals when it was at it's height. Would have had people running around with unkempt hair and flannels (good thing that didn't catch on) or cruising around in all black with dark make-up. Then their would of been the despair, brooding, and depression attitude of individuals with the entire somethings wrong, there has to be meaning, there has to be a message bit. Can you imagine what models would of been like if that happened. Probably have stringy unkempt hair, with palish skin, no smiling in anything... for that mix of brooding and rebellion... like crazy anorexic looking. Almost dirty looking. Probably would of coined the models look with a name like..heroin chic or something.

Lol, man fashion shoots for billboards and magazines would of looked like this or something:

Who are you to say what's the most popular music right now? Record sales? Because if you used that rap still wouldn't be the most popular. Who's to say in the 90's grunge was most popular? Posting a pic? ALL music has influence on whatever people choose to follow that music, those boys could have been influenced by country music just as well as rap.

Lol grunge music just influenced people to dress and look a type of way rap music influences kids to use racial slurs...

Yes, people following fashion trends of celebrities and people killing innocents because the radio told them to equates perfectly.

Your logic is flawless sir, there is no way to debate that.

Before you chimed in they used Kanye as example of violence against the police and using the n word....Kanye first 3 albums classics. Of course he spoke out against racism....they have to hate him....
