Baeball vs. South Carolina - game 3

Recommended Posts

Auburn looks to take game 3 and win the series today. I'll be here for the first hour of the game. At 2, I'm moving to the softball game. Hopefully someone can do the updates here then. I'll try to keep up with this one after the softball game starts but doubt it will be very consistent.

USC offense pretty well dependent on their 3 and 4 hole hitters. After Friday night it's clear that Holliday is absolutely not going to let Kyle Martin be a one man wrecking crew. Rentz has done a nice job navigating that part of the order twice now,

0-0 after 3 complete.

AU up 3-0 going to the bottom of the 9th. Chance to win the series and maybe cement their place in the NCAA tournament.

Wingenter on to try to get the save.

Final, AU wins 3-0. Good weekend for AU as they are probably in the tournament now and playing well.

AU takes the series...gets to .500 in the conference now. Typical "Sunny ball" game....do a lot with not very much...but some good pitching. Nice to win this series without KT on the mound.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Auburn baseball earned its first series win over South Carolina since 1997 with a 3-0 three-hit shutout on Sunday at Carolina Stadium.

The Tigers (32-17, 12-12) had lost 13 consecutive series with South Carolina before Sunday’s win. The loss dropped SC to 27-21, 10-14 on the year.

Auburn took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Damon Haecker. The Tigers then stretched that lead to 3-0 on a two-run double by Kyler Deese in sixth.

Daniel Robert had three hits and Anfernee Grier added a pair of knocks with a run scored and a stolen base. Deese had two RBIs.

Justin Camp (W, 2-0) pitched 3.1 innings in relief to earn the victory. He struck out three with no hits allowed.

Dalton Rentz started for Auburn and pitched 4.2 innings and did not allow a run. He did allow two hits and three walks.

Three different Gamecocks recorded hits.

Clarke Schmidt (2-1) took the loss on the hill for South Carolina. He allowed three runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings pitched.

The Tigers are off on the midweek before hosting Alabama for three games at Plainsman Park beginning Friday.

I had to bail in the 4th and followed on GameTracker, this is a great series win.

USCe is not what they once were, but neither is Auburn. We got absolutely destroyed on Friday night and that pitching staff gave up two runs over the last eighteen innings without our ace and Saturday starter. After eight conference series the identity of the team is pretty obvious. These guys are fighters. They are tough and they haven't gotten down in some instances where they might have in previous years. I'm certain this is what Sunny was aiming for when he talked about changing the culture. It's pretty amazing to me to see so many guys playing all over the place and I assume they don't care where they play. They understand the concept of team. I love the effort and the fight that these guys show day after day. The best part is they're getting better as the season wears on.

32-17 overall and 12-12 in conference (first time at .500 in quite some time).

RPI at 15 14 this afternoon.

All of that against the 3rd toughest schedule in the country.

Well said POD....... wonder what happen to all the Sunny haters????

never fear Golf...they are lurking out there waiting on AU to lose a series to someone.....as for me....I HATE small ball, but gotta admit that Sunny knows what he has and makes the best of it.

This is a pretty good team made up mostly of average players. The Tigers have an excellent RPI and yet, probably only one All-SEC caliber player on the team. Like we've seen on the football field lately, the sum is much great than the individual parts ....as POD noted.

I don't think there were a lot of "haters". It was more so just people who were concerned with the reputation which seemed to be confirmed by the really tough stance Sunny took with some of the guys who seemed shocked by the idea that they weren't irreplaceable. Throw in a beat writer who may have gotten his nose bent out of shape by said abrasive coach and that's a little unnerving. I will admit that I got a little worried at the end of last year. I have a bit of a roundabout connection to a certain first baseman who did not get a ton of playing time last year, whose parents were also concerned with what unfolded in his freshman season. The (falsely) rumored Foxhall lawsuit and the internet chatter about a Jacobs - Golloway come to Jesus meeting made things look irretrievable for a minute.

I believe Tom Holliday was a God send for all parties involved. I saw the mid-game interview with him on Saturday and I sincerely hope he's having as much fun as he said he is. He deserves it.

As it was stated often last year, winning takes care of everything. You have to learn how first, and that can be a really tough process.

"OMAHA" isn't as brash and ridiculous of a mantra that it once felt like. We're not there yet, but we are definitely closer.

Thank you AU Baseball for finally beating the coots in a series. First time since 1997. WDE!

Such a good series win! USCe might not be its normal powerhouse self, but to go into that baseball crazy environment (if it is still as rowdy as year's past) and take 2 of 3 without an ace is big time. Cmon Tigers, keep improving that postseason position and give me a better travel spot than Tallahassee! WDE!
