quietfan 233
Three questions: 1. How many here know the definition of "argumentum ad hominem"? If not: https://en.wikipedia....i/Ad_hominem or http://www.merriam-w...nary/ad hominem 2. What is the average number of occurrences of this per page in the "Politically Speaking" forum? (A somewhat rhetorical question because I don't expect anyone to actually wade through the morass of past posts.) 3. Why does anyone see any value in making such posts? It doesn't matter if your I.Q. is 35 or 235, if you have a point to make, others should only address the facts or logic of the words in that point, not your personal level of intelligence. You may be the spawn of Satan or the next incarnation of Christ, but your words carry only the weight of their own logic, and your character or past positions on other subjects are moot points. I don't care if you're Christian, Muslim or atheist; conservative, liberal or nihilist; Democrat, Republican or Independent...your view of another person's character or political history has NO bearing on the accuracy or rationality of that person's current words or argument. Whether a poster is stupid, brilliant, brainwashed, conservative, liberal, Christian, heathen, "Libtard", or "FOX-bot", and whatever circles they associate with, sewing or otherwise; please: Respond to their comments on the strength or weakness of their arguments, the accuracy and rationality of their claims. Attacking their person, their political affiliations, or their intelligence says nothing about the validity of their words and just makes you look petty or "debate-challenged" yourself. (And wastes a lot of my reading time as well!!) - - - - - - - - - - - - - That said: Sorry for the rant, I'm just feeling particularly moody this afternoon and such ad hominem attacks are leaving me more irritated or exasperated than usual. Excuse the 'sand in my vagina', but I really needed to vent. ....I know for many of you I'm preaching to the choir!

Excuse the 'sand in my vagina', but I really needed to vent. ....I know for many of you I'm preaching to the choir! Great post. I don't hang our here as much as some do. When I see the topic on the main page I find the topic I'm interested in and it seems like 90% of the time by the 2nd page the opposing view has derailed the thread using this tactic. Maybe I don't hang around as much because of this happening on so many post. When some topics have a thoughtful discussion, I sometimes find I have things in common with people I didn't think I would. It's funny, when I've mention this in threads I get accused of getting my "feelings hurt" or "playing the victim" LOL.

That BS is for pansy, poetic, socialist, intellectual, liberals. You have to make stuff up and talk tough. It aint what you say, it's how you say it. LIbtards, SMH. quietfan 233
Case in point: http://www.nbcnews.c...assions-n383796 "Justice Breyer speculates that it does not 'seem likely' that the death penalty has a 'significant' deterrent effect," he wrote later. "But we federal judges live in a world apart from the vast majority of Americans. After work, we retire to homes in placid suburbia or to high-rise co-ops with guards at the door. "We are not confronted with the threat of violence that is ever present in many Americans' everyday lives. The suggestion that the incremental deterrent effect of capital punishment does not seem 'significant' reflects, it seems to me, a let-them-eat-cake obliviousness to the needs of others. Let the People decide how much incremental deterrence is appropriate." Wouldn't it have been a more effective rebuttal if Justice Scalia had simply produced some facts or figures rebutting her speculation, rather than insulting her as "oblivious to the needs of others"? Or just leave out the middle and stop with: "Justice Breyer speculates that it does not 'seem likely' that the death penalty has a 'significant' deterrent effect. Let the People decide how much incremental deterrence is appropriate."
