Tuesday, August 4th (Day 1)

2:55-3:15 PM CT – Open to the media
5:45 PM CT– Gus Malzahn, selected players post-practice interviews

A couple observations from Auburn's first day of fall practice: 1. It is *quite* hot outside. 2. Byron Cowart is a very large human being.

Junior safety Tray Matthews absent from early portion of practice.

Sophomore Nick Ruffin was taking reps with the first-team defense in place of Matthews.

The first-team defense was Carl Lawson and DaVonte Lambert at end with Maurice Swain and Dontavius Russell at tackle.

Kris Frost and Cassanova McKinzy were at linebacker with Cameron Toney and Blake Countess alternating at the Sam/Nickel spot.

Josh Holsey and Jonathan Jones were at corner with Ruffin and Johnathan Ford at safety

The first wide receiver group was D'haquille Williams, Marcus Davis, Melvin Ray and Jason Smith. Third group was Myron Burton, Jonathan Wallace, Stanton Truitt and Gray King

For the initial pre-practice periods the freshman who were not previously on campus were all off to the side and not in helmets.

Roc Thomas and Jovon Robinson split the reps with the first-team offense during drills, receiving the handoffs from Jeremy Johnson. That left Peyton Barber to work with the second-team and backup quarterback Tyler Queen. When the Tigers began their "pace" drills -- with them lining up and running a play as quickly as possible -- Thomas was the only one to receive first-team reps before media members were asked to leave.

Auburn o-lline coach J.B. Grimes at practice after having surgery to remove cancerous spot from tongue. As a precaution, he also had lymph nodes removed from the right side of his neck

I'm curious... I don't remember all of these duplicate numbers until just the last few years. I understand that the "main" rule is that they cannot be on the field at the same time, but was there a rule change that allowed dupe's? ..or maybe my head's just been under a rock until recently but I honestly don't remember this until very recently.
