2016 JUCO QB recruiting

For those who say Gus doesn't teach his QB's to go through receiver Progression and always has a single target. Chris mixed it up very well and went through progressions.

Chris Todd was already a finished product; he was brought up in the Air Raid system which routinely sees the QB throw 40+ times per game. I really hope you aren't suggesting that Malzahn "taught" him how to play.

He certainly looked better under Gus than he did under Franklin.

Didn't Todd have some surgery that kept him out a year?....for a while prior to his time at AU it was thought his career was over. JMO but using him as an example is not a good comparison except that he seemed to make a great recovery that enabled him to play at AU.

John Franklin iii is visiting this weekend. He is a DT Juco QB that originally signed with Florida State.

IMO if AU offers Franklin I think Gus has hit the panic button. He must not think White can get the job done. But I think Queen is done. So who knows.

Why would you think it's hitting the panic button ? Is it a JUCO QB in general or is it just Franklin ? When you look at what we have right now for next year, it just seems prudent to me.

White played well in his first game so it is promising. He started 1 game and is still a RFresh so Gus doesn't know how it will work out the rest of the year. Even if White does well and is the starter next year, what does Gus know he has, as of "today", as an injury backup for next year ?

1. JJ- didn't do well in his first audition. Right now it's an unknown.

2. Queen- Gus has no idea how well he comes back from surgery and if he does, how well he would play in a game. A big unknown.

3. Smith- always a possibility but Gus has never used him as a QB in a game. A big unknown.

(coming in '16)

4. Barrett- a true Freshman and way too soon to count on him.

5. JUCO QB- would already have playing experience and be a prudent addition as a backup. If he is better than that, then he would be a very good addition. But frankly, we need a QB on the roster with some solid playing time. The JUCO is also not real competition for a true Freshman (ie. Barrett) coming in. If Barrett redshirts, he would be a RFr. when the JUCO is a Sr.

Guess it's a philosophical issue....if you bring in a Juco, he has an advantage over a freshman or RS freshman because he's played a season (or two) at a level of football beyond HS...and if he gets the job, how are you going to develop your young QBs?

Just thinking that if we use Jucos as our fallback position every time there is a question about our younger guys, we might as well not spend the the time and effort to bring in kids right out of HS and just go after a good Juco each year.

Is that supposed to mean something? Franklin's offense here was a dumpster fire because he had zero support. Of course Todd looked better in an offense that wasn't a dumpster fire.

Chris Todd played in 5 games at Texas Tech and threw a whole 35 passes so yes I am giving Gus credit for his development.

Chris Todd played in that offense all throughout HS and had significant practice reps at Texas Tech. He was already well versed in a passing offense and therefore had all of the tools to make quick reads and deliver the ball to the open receiver. Gus Malzahn's passing offense is Mickey Mouse, which is why all of the guys that are actually his own projects seem to look completely incapable of throwing the football, because he obviously can't teach them himself.

Translation: All facts that might point to positive outcomes of Gus's coaching will be attributed to other people no matter what. All facts that point to negative outcomes are totally on Gus. Got it.

LMFAO. Are you lost? Your argument is nonexistent. Did you forget the Tony Franklin mess here? It was Franklin against every other coach we had on staff. He blew up in a practice and started coaching every single position by himself like a lunatic. That actually happened. When something fails as badly as that did, there isn't a single thing that is going to look good...therefore the fact that Todd looked better the following year in an offense that wasn't doomed to fail from the start should be expected, that is called LOGIC.

Gus has been getting credit for years now. You don't need to pretend like he taught a Senior QB with years of experience in an extreme pass-oriented offense how to throw the ball successfully. If he could supposedly make that big a turnaround in Todd in one offseason by himself, then why does our former top recruit with three offseasons under Gus look horrible?

Ever think that maybe JJ's problems are more on JJ than they are Gus? Serious question.

If necessary, I think you have to have both. QB is the most important position on the team and you have to have good play at QB to have any chance at all. First you establish the standard for the level of play at the position and then let that standard determine your decision. If you don't have one, you better be going out to find someone.

If you are lucky enough to have a RFr or Soph that can play at a level that meets the standard, that's great. But even when QBs are groomed for the job, a coach can never know how the player will react to the responsibility of being the #1 guy and starter, until they actually have to do it. It's a state of mind and no practice can duplicate that moment.

So at the very least, a JuCo or a graduate transfer with some starting experience is a nice backup if a TrFr or Soph beats him out for the job.

Ever think that maybe JJ's problems are more on JJ than they are Gus? Serious question.

Then why did we go into this season with literally zero second options? They don't even let White throw the ball. If they failed to see that JJ sucked this badly, then that is just as bad if not worse. An offensive head coach should be able to discern what he has at QB, and please don't try and suggest that his one half against Arkansas last season must have been enough to convince them that he was legit. That is absurd.

Think he was eluding to to problems in JJs head. From all reports, what JJ showed in Spring and Fall camps would lead you to believe SW never played unless an injury occurred.

We won the game, that was the goal. Less film, more experience, slow things down on both sides of the ball, get off the ledge.

Two years removed from coming within a minute of winning a National Championship yet we are relegated to "slowing things down" to the point wherein we now can't even risk attempting more than 10 passes against a team we should be able to whip in our sleep. You should be very worried, seriously. Coaches that prove to survive this conference don't tend to allow collapses of this magnitude under their watch.

I understand what a mess Franklin left. But I also understand it's not nearly as simplistic regarding Gus as you'd like to present. You can nitpick and try to act as if Gus doesn't know what he's doing if you like, but the fact remains that our offense was moribund in 2006, 2007 and a disaster in 2008. Gus came in and Todd set passing records here, and you and I both know Chris Todd was nothing special as a QB. Offense exploded in 2010 under Cam. It was spotty in 2011 but still better than 2007-08. We had a couple of non-entities at QB. Trotter had promise but was only a 3* coming out of HS and the knee injuries did nothing to help. Moseley was never an SEC QB and never going to be. Loeffler comes in with all his great QB coaching experience and craters the offense. Gus returns in 2013 with and takes an INT machine but superb athlete and has an offense that was virtually unstoppable after the 1st half of the LSU game. The offense had some dropoff last year but was still one of the best in the country. Now we're struggling.

I just don't think you look at all that, take into account all the circumstances and can boil it down to simply "Gus can't coach QBs." That may satisfy the human desire for easy answers, but it doesn't pass the smell test.

^This. But heaven forbid if you suggest that Malzahn (or even Chizik for heaven's sake) weren't home-run hires, LOL.

I watched Jeremy in HS. He was a Montgomery kid and he tore it up. We've seen limited playing time with him at Auburn before this season, including a season-opening start against an SEC opponent. He looked great. I've talked to numerous people who've watched him in practice not only last year but in the spring and fall leading up to this year. Almost universal praise. There was no indication that there would be any serious issues with Jeremy. You simply cannot always predict how a kid will react when the lights come on and he is "The Man." You seem to think that an offensive coach much be an infallible clairvoyant who can sense things undetectable to the naked eye. I think sometimes kids just don't pan out and they don't give you any warning. Alabama has 4 or 5 top rated QBs on their roster and until Saturday, they still weren't sure they had one that could get the job done. Coker has been a disappointment for over a year and none of the backups could make a move. Bateman was a complete disaster in his first start. Jeff Driskel was wanted by everyone and was a total flop. This stuff happens.

I think the staff had full confidence that the Jeremy they'd seen for two years was the guy that would be the starter this fall. Meanwhile Sean would get a year or two to learn, get bigger and stronger and we'd keep recruiting QBs so that in two years when JJ moved on, we'd have a guy that was clearly the heir apparent. Jeremy's meltdown was immediate and Sean is now being pressed into service faster than we wanted and Queen is injured. As far as another back up plan, was there some hot shot JUCO out there willing to come and expect to be a backup that I'm unaware of.

I just think your expectations for what people should be able to predict is a bit unrealistic.

Good Lord. A good staff would have had a plan for White had Johnson gone down with an injury or looked like he has. Both are TOTALLY different QB's with TOTALLY different skill sets. AU did not have a plan in place for White. No way to sugar coat this.

And to bring up Alabama in this conversation is well stupid. Kiffin has shown he can adapt to his QB's. Had a DT QB last year in Sim's and coached to his talents. Played more of a wide open offense. Now has a pro style QB in Coker and is coaching Coker to his talents. More power running to set up some short to moderate passing to get the D from stacking the box. Come on people.

His comments about predictions on a new starting QB are spot on. As I said in an earlier post, no coach can predict how a QB will react the first time he becomes 'THE' QB with the responsibility to lead the team. That moment is a lot different than being a backup QB with someone else to lean on.

There is no practice session that can duplicate it, none that can help a coach predict how a QB will handle it and no physical talent that can overcome it. It is a mental ability and handling pressure in real time, not practice, is dictated by a person's state of mind.

And everyone keeps bring up JUCO QB's. If Gus has to get one this year KISS getting a top flight high school QB including the one's AU has committed. The rest of the coaches in the nation will eat his lunch in QB recruiting as in not being able to develop one.

Which is, unless I'm mistaken, what we're trying to do with Sean. We just don't run more than four different plays, attempt more than 10 passes, apparently have lazy receivers, and poor offensive line play. Sound right?

Which is, unless I'm mistaken, what we're trying to do with Sean. We just don't run more than four different plays, attempt more than 10 passes, apparently have lazy receivers, and poor offensive line play. Sound right?

Do you people even watch the games? Some of you are like blind sheep following a Shepard. White is running the same offense that Johnson was running. White should never be trying to run the zone read to set up anything and that was the plan for AU this year with Johnson. White should be running an AU offense like Chris Todd did.

That is absurd.

..............Yes. I do. But I never played football and don't know much about the X's and O's. To my untrained eye it looks like, whether you want to call it zone read or whatever, we are basically leaning on the run (and sadly, the sweep); then we occasionally throw a short pass and once in a blue moon we throw a deep one. Is that incorrect?
