Rather got caught trying to pitch a story that hoped to rig an election, and got caught. There's nothing in a fictional movie that will change any of that. I am not defending the movie. I cannot defend it. I haven't even seen it. However, there are sides to this story. There is certainly the side of the phony documents used by Mapes and Rather. There is the side that this was a deliberate and calculated political attack and, not "journalism". There is the the side that W. Bush's service can be questioned. There is a side that political connections were used by many to avoid military service in Vietnam. Personally, I would not judge Rather or W.
