"We're extremely excited to have a guy with his experience, his character, his work ethic," Malzahn said. "He'll fit in very well. He's going to take over a very talented group."

Steele comes to Auburn from LSU, where he served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach this season. He's been a defensive coordinator at Alabama and Clemson as well.

Steele's background includes the NFL with Carolina and a stint as head coach at Baylor.

Auburn linebacker Kris Frost said Steele will find "a whole bunch of guys who have an incredible work ethic — guys who are always willing to, we say, are going to work; always willing to clock in, get work done; and clock out. They come in with the same attitude each and every day."

Steele's 2010 Clemson defense led the ACC, allowing 18.8 points per game.

Tuesday, Steele's LSU defense held high-flying Texas Tech to 19 points and 189 yards, well below its season average of 46.5 points per game and 588.1 yards per game.

Steele was a member of the 1994 national championship staff at Nebraska and has worked under such head coaches as Tom Osborne (Nebraska), Bobby Bowden (Florida State), Nick Saban (Alabama), Les Miles (LSU), Johnny Majors (Tennessee) and Dom Capers (Carolina Panthers).

ESPN's Chris Low is reporting ...

Barring a late snag, it looks like LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is headed to Auburn for the same position.

LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele has emerged as the leading candidate for the same position at Auburn, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has been looking for a replacement for Will Muschamp, who left earlier this month after just one season to become the head coach at South Carolina. The Tigers are looking for their third defensive coordinator since Malzahn was hired prior to the 2013 season.

Auburn faces Memphis on Wednesday in the Birmingham Bowl, and nothing would be finalized until after the game.

The 57-year-old Steele is a 34-year coaching veteran who's worked for some of the biggest names in the sport -- Nick Saban, Bobby Bowden, Tom Osborne, Les Miles and John Majors.

LSU, which capped its season with a 56-27 win over Texas Tech in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl on Tuesday night, ranked fifth in the SEC this past season in total defense and entered the bowl game ranked No. 3 nationally in fewest plays allowed of 20 yards or longer.

The Tigers held Texas Tech to nearly 20 points below its season average of 46.6 points per game.

Auburn will be Steele's fourth different SEC coaching stop. He also coached at Tennessee, his alma mater, and had two different stints at Alabama under Saban. He's been a successful recruiter everywhere he's been.

"He's an outstanding coach and as strong as anybody I've ever seen in recruiting," Bowden said.

Steele was the head coach at Baylor from 1999 to 2002 and also coached in the NFL as the linebackers coach for the Carolina Panthers from 1995-98.

The only thing I knew about Kevin Steele is that he coached under Saban and was fired from Clemson. This article, written when he was hired by LSU earlier this year, was insightful.

This came out from left field....

Edit) I grade this coaching hire a D-

Why a D-? The guy has been around and seems better than some of the other names being thrown around. I know his time at Clemson was not good, but seemed to do a decent job this year.

I F true.....THIS would be a VERY good hire. GREAT player's coach and GREAT on the recruiting trail...... :wareagle:

After reading the entire article , I would rate it as an iffy hire, if true. One decent year as a dc at a talent rich school. Sounds like his strengths over 34 years have been as a position coach.

Great recruiter and teacher though, so maybe it would work out.

He was widely viewed as a total failure of a hire (on this board) for LSU when they hired him as DC so lets see how people spin this one.....

this was my first thought as well... Let's see how this plays out.

Boy, we really nailed this one with our predictions and prognostications . . . okay, maybe not!

Though, to be fair, it was reported we were looking within the SEC ranks and, there were a few who predicted it would be a name not being mentioned by the talking heads.

Any possibility he brings Ed Orgeron with him?

Not sure we are looking to replace CRG. Would think maybe Orgeron may get the promo to DC. :dunno:

Chris Low of ESPN is reporting that “barring a late snag” LSU defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is heading to Auburn to be Gus Malzahn’s defensive coordinator. Sources tell FootballScoop that Auburn’s offer is real; but that LSU is trying to retain him this morning. We also hear that Steele is close to vesting in Alabama’s pension plan….so. Will update…

Better possibility of retaining Lance!

Lance needs one more year to be vested in Alabama for retirement... Contrary to popular belief, he's not looking to leave. The hiring of Steele would help.

The job was Diaz's to turn down. Guess Steele was next on the list.
