WIde receivers

Serious question. Which one is more of a problem with our wide receivers? Route running, dropped balls or run blocking? Also do you think the wide receiver play has had an effect on how bad the qbs have looked?

When a QB misses a WR by a little or by a lot, it could be that the WR did not run the route correctly or not at the same speed as practiced. Or it could be that the QB just threw a bad pass. Many passes are timing routes. The QB throws to a spot by the clock in his head. If the WR is not where he is supposed to be it looks like a bad pass but it may not have been. We as fans can't really tell in most cases because we don't see the practices or know the timing of the play.

I was thinking the same thing. Both JJ and SW can throw a pretty pass but it looks really bad when the receiver isn't where he is supposed to be. I wonder who was in the wrong when SW threw the pass down the sideline which looked like he had over thrown RL, but to me it looked like RL stopped on his route.

Quarterbacks will not always be right on target. We haven't had a receiver, except for Duke, who could go get some of those balls and bring them in. They just don't have the physical ability to do that.

110 % correct. Rhythm is of equal importance and based on the inconsistency of both positions this year, there wasn't much rhythm to go off.

You are correct. Or WRs did not have the best hands. They could make a great catch of a pass not on target but them drop one that was perfect. We need consistency at that position.

Ricardo Louis was pretty good. He could go up and get some tough catches, but dropped lots of easy passes too.

We don't have a difference maker at WR, like we did with Coates/Williams. Marcus Davis, Jason Smith and Tony Stevens do look pretty promising. I hope we can get back a 100% healthy Stanton Truitt added to the mix as well get some of those youngsters out there to make an impact.

I also hope we can start to mix in the TE/HB's and RB's into the passing game a little more and open things up a bit.

Quan bray as well. People don't mention him as much but he actually could go up and get it as well. To be blunt and honest these guys this year just aren't as physically impressive or gifted as last year's guys.

Running back as well.

Do you think Kyle Davis, Eli Stove and/ or NCM (assuming we get him) will be able to be the go to receiver(s) next year?

Yes, we don't know if a miss was on the QB or if it was on the WR because it was a timing route. But one thing we do know that is on the WR, is dropping the ball and catching radius. I watched the tall Ole Miss WRs in their bowl game catch just about everything that came their way. Our WRs "as an entire unit" are not there. Not all of them but overall. But dropped balls are a basic skill, after all that is what a WR does.

A WR coach can drill into a WR all day long the proper hand positions and the need to watch the ball into his hands. Other than that there is not a lot a coach can do when a receiver is constantly dropping the ball. If a player doesn't have that basic skill, he better get on the jugs machine and catch 400 balls a day to develop it or get benched. I mean there is a certain level of talent a player "should" have to receive a D1 scholarship. That gets back to scouting and recruiting.

Quan was one of the best at going up and fighting for the ball. I think his size forced him to developed that ability and to his credit, he sure did.

Part of problem was recruiting of position. I think they have changed directions on it. Stopped recruiting athletes and are recruiting guys that have played wr. It is easy to defend basic wheel routes, especially if they do not bite on PA or there is not exceptional speed to just run by someone.

I just don't understand all the dropped balls this year. It seems to be an epidemic on our team.

And it's frustrating to see other teams have true freshman and RSfreshmen making huge plays and making their QBs look great.

Curious - anyone know which receivers on our team this year were primarily receivers throughout their high school career? (That's a hint).

Melvin Ray, Stephen Roberts and both freshman?
