Malzahn's off the field offensive coaches

If Malzahn can turn things around, I'll be interested to see if he eventually brings back any of his off-the-field coaches that have moved on to be position coaches at other schools.

Bobby Bentley - South Carolina RB coach

Chip Lindsey - Arizona State QB coach / OC

Kodi Burns - Arizona State WR coach

Dell McGee - Georgia RB coach

Tim Horton & Rhett Lashlee were both mentioned as candidates for head coaching positions this past year. If called upon, it will be interesting to see if these guys would be loyal to Malzahn and return to the plains.

Malzahn is becoming like Tuberville. He's too loyal to his staff. When things started going south on Tuberville's team, people told him to make changes in order to get the team back on track. But being hard headed and loyal to his staff, he didn't make any big changes. Do y'all when he named Hugh Nall as OC and how well that worked out? It wasn't too long after that that he was fired. If Malzahn doesn't make some offensive changes with his OC and OL, he too could very well be fired after next year.

I don't believe you.

Glad that feller ain't on the BOT.

I can understand why some might want a new OC but OL coach has been great at Auburn. We had to replace 3 out of 5 starters this year and O-line got better as year went on. Last year we killed it on 2015 O-Line recruiting. We might have to replace 1-2 starters this year. I am glad we have Grimes to oversee that.

You do realize if either of our QBs have just an above average season, we have at least 8 wins, don't you?

Rumors during the season were that Grimes would be retiring after the season was over. I hate to lose him as I think his unit performed very well this year...Coleman really improved over the course of the season. I'm interested to see if there is any shuffling of duties among the other offensive coaches. Cole says we should hear something in the next 24 hours.

And to a4e...it took 4 more years after CTT's botched OC hiring of Nall for him to be fired.

Those rumors were debunked by the man, himself. I don't have time to dig up the interview, but it's posted on here in another discussion about Grimes.

We had golden opportunities to win the UGA, Ark, OM, even MSU and bammer. If had won those games, we might be playing net Monday for the NC. We were in each of those games. The LSU game was the only game that we were out of reach of.

So he's no longer retiring this year, then?

The SEC was ripe for the taking this year ~ and one team took advantage of the opportunity.

The same SEC that went 8-2 in bowl games? And remember none of the 8 wins were close, even the ones where the SEC teams were ranked lower or were unranked.

I don't buy the the SEC was down this year.

It wasn't down compared to the rest of the conferences, but the teams in it were far more even across the board than they have been in a long time. A few bounces of the ball in different directions could have seen a very different outcome in the SEC. There was no dominant team, let alone the several dominant teams we've seen in years past.

I know last year they tried to get Josh Nibblett from Hoover to take an off field position. I know he is a bama grad but with those positions open I wonder if they go after him again.

This is the most disturbing thing to me about our current staff. They have had JJ for three years, and SW for 2 years. How is it that JJ looked like he had never played football against an actual defense before, yet our coaches were leading his heisman campaign before the season started! And even though SW looked good on the short passes, he didn't seem too big of a threat on anything beyond 15 yards. However, we continued to call deep passing plays for SW when he was in the game against UGA and in the bowl game against Memphis. I like Gus, and I think he can turn this around, but this season had me scratching my head!

JJ does not have the stones or heart. Stage is too big for him especially when the lights come on. Sean has the intangibles and leadership, just does not have the raw talent and skills that JJ has. If you could combine the two then you would have an awesome QB.

You may be right, I won't argue. My feeling is JJ comes out next year like we thought he would be this year. Just my opinion, though.

Based on what we saw from both of them, attitude wise, at the end of the year, I have a feeling they are both going to be busting their butts to be the best that they can be. Whether either gets there remains to be seen, but they both have areas of talent that, when refined, could turn either or both into the best QBs in the SEC. Fingers crossed that they really do have the maturity to take it upon themselves to do the work.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised if JJ came out strong next year. He just needs to practice against an actual pass rush and needs to be taking hits. Intestinal fortitude would make a world of difference.

This goes to what Muschamp was complaining about after the LSU game regarding changing the culture for the football program. The HC sets the culture.

There is no telling to what aspect of culture Muschamp was referring, or even if the aspect he was describing NEEDED changing. There is plenty to change...but there is plenty to keep the same. I do agree that it would be amazing if next year was a breakout year for Jeremy Johnson, and I also agree that the leadership of any organization is top-down...but I would hardly insinuate that whatever "culture" CGM brings to the table or promotes rates as "uncompetitive" or in desperate need of overhaul. CGM is DRIVEN to excel, and it must kill him when his PLAN does not go according to PLAN. Jeremy Johnson's performance mystified him as much as anyone, and although he gets paid "the big bucks" to straighten that kind of thing out, not even God can control our own free will...or ineptitude. :dunno:

Muschamp was trying to light a fire under his defensive players more than anything else after that game.

Didn't Muschamp say the attitude of the D when he got there was not "lets get a stop every series" but more of "if we let them score 28 thats fine. Our O will put up 30"?
