2016 Coaching Staff

I am not a sunshine pumper but I am probably a slight optimist when it comes to AU football. I know there are plenty of negative-nellies around here that will try to destroy me on this thread but I want to say a couple of things about next year's coaching staff.

First, I believe the hires we made were very good. If you told me that we got a DC that was a great recruiter, running a similar D to 2015, with SEC DC experience; I would say that is probably a very good hire. If you told me that we got a DB coach with DC experience, came from the NFL as a DB coach and had some thinking HC material; I would say that is probably a very good hire. If you told me we got a young, energetic LB coach, who loves AU, who can relate and sell AU to the youth of today, along with the fact that he was a great AU LBer and has been working with these kids already; Again probably another great hire. If you tell me we are keeping RG around because he has improved the DL play and he has busted his butt to keep this recruiting class up. Again probably another good decision. (I know RG is a sticky point for many but he has busted his butt to do what he can with what he has and to keep this recruiting class in the top 10) All in all I would give these changes an A for Gus & JJ. (I used the word probably in all of this because I can't see the future and I don't know that these will be good/great decision, but in my opinion... probably are).

Secondly and most importantly, I believe these hires show that JJ has faith in Gus and is not going to have a knee jerk reaction like the fans. I am tired of new HC every 4 years. I am tired of new DC every 1-2 years. I want stability in the program so that more talent will want to give us a look and not be afraid of going through what so many have had to endure. Some these kids when have had to learn a new system every year they are in the program. That is hard to overcome no matter your talent as a player or a team. Bringing in a DC that is an AU fan who wants to finish his career here (taking the coach speak for what it is). Promoting a young and rising coach from an ex-player to LB coach also shows you want to get some youth in there and build the program. Enough of trying to hire the hottest name. Or trying to appease the loudest fans. Bring coaches in that want to be here and want to stay long enough to make a difference. Bring in the type of coaches that want to be a part of the AU family. Good job CGM & JJ!!

Lastly for all the negative replies that will be in this thread. Get on the Gus Bus and quit complaining about every little decision. Have a little faith in your AD & the coaching staff and believe that they might actually know what is going on a little better than you (as they are closer and actually getting paid). I may get frustrated at a play, player, coach or even some decisions by the coaches as all fans do. But the cold hard reality is that these guys that are coaching this are doing it because they love it and are very good at what they do. In fact better than me and 99.99% of those reading these forums. So get over it. It is just a game in the end and life will go on.

WDE to the AU Family and to the new coaches!!!

I'm not crazy about the Steele hire (looks like another E. Johnson to me, hopefully this one turns out better!), but i did like the assistants he hired. I personally don't buy into the fire RL crap. This offense and its success lies squarely on the shoulders of Gus and only Gus. So I could care less that he didn't make any changes on the O staff. Now if you were to ask me do you like the 2016 staff better than the 2015 staff? That would be a big 'no'. But that doesn't mean they can't be more successful. Here's hoping that Muschamp got the D pointed in the right direction and Steele can keep them pointed that way. I'm hoping Malzahn does much better with the offense next year. His genius status though is gone in my eyes. We'll see if he can resurrect that image.

I like the staff as well.

One of the biggest things I didn't like about the Muschamp hire that was clearly an emphasis with these hires is stability! Malzahn knows what he plans to build here, and he needs more stability (specifically with his D Assts) to make it happen. Of the folks from the 2015 staff that are gone, the only one I miss is TRob and I am proud of him for going out and getting a DC job. I wish him the best.

I fully believe Gus and this staff can build a CONSISTENT winner at AU!!!

I'm still worried that since there was no changes made on the offense, we'll see another 3 plays and punt or some like of turnovers like we saw in 2015.

Has there been any further talk about J. B. Grimes retiring? we heard about coach Grimes' battle with cancer in 2015, and I'm just wondering how his health he is doing now and his he been considering stepping down now that the season is finally over. I'm sure he's battle was very long and hard but I'm glad he's still with us. My oldest sister had cancer but she lost her fight back on December 10, 2010.

Cole Cubelic was asked on twitter if AU staff changes were finished and he replied "No." This was after the new defensive staff was announced.

Well that could mean anything. It could be some new of field coaches or it could mean nothing. CC has not exactly been that accurate with a lot of what he's put out there.

Yep...that was a pretty easy call by CC....with all the off-field guys leaving, there will probably be more activity with the staff to fill those jobs....and I bet the situation with Coach Grimes is more than 50:50 for a change there.

There were changes on offense. Our biggest issue was inconsistent QB play. We have 2 dual threat QB's coming in to hopefully address this. Now, will they solve the issue? Time will tell, but as usual your negative post was not that well thought out.

Word is J.B. Grimes could be M.I.A. by next season according to coachingsearch

I think someone mentioned here a while back that he was okay now.

AL.com just confirmed he is set to interview with Cincinnati.
