What is the difference between AU and Clemson's programs?

Let me say first off that there must be something different other than just QB play and am looking for reasons beyond that as it's obvious JJ and Watson are not in the same class (LOL, remember the thread over the summer we had which debated which one is the better player?). Both schools recruit from the same pool of players, both schools run very similar offensive systems, and both schools have had similarly ranked recruiting classes over the past few years. They churn out tons lots of players to the NFL and especially at the WR position and we are both running almost the same exact offensive system. What is Dabo doing that Gus isn't? They are supposed to be a Auburn-lite from the ACC and here they are playing for a national title. They are having the season everyone thought AU would have this year. What do you guys think the main difference is?

They work as a team, attack as a team, and trust as a team. Also continuity within the players and staff. They had a qb they knew would go out every game and play. And I used to hate Dabo but I think he's matured over the years and is a dang good coach.

Got to be some reason Coach Heisman left us for them.

They do have a pretty campus in a pretty neighborhood.

We played for 2 national titles in 10 years, they haven't since 81. That's the difference.

Apples to oranges.

I'm talking more about current status of the programs (as thats what truly matters) as they have proven to be in much better shape than us over the course of the last 2 seasons even with all of our similarities.

I'm in the same boat as you regarding Dabo. He used to annoy me but if we had Dabo on our sidelines I wouldn't be mad about it at all (not asking to implement change from Gus, just saying). He has worked to position Clemson extremely well as a CEO-style coach.

There are a LOT of similarities between both programs. I've honestly given up wondering what has happened to this team in the last 2 years. When you field a team with the offense and defense ranked in the 90's at the end of the season where do you even start to clean up the mess?

Key injuries were replaced !!!

Have intact QB - (lot's of ways to say this) . . .

Tony Elliott has developed as an OC - while jury is still out on Rhett Lashlee.

And a stable defense that's mature with a DC who's been there for 3-4 years

Not sure if their BOT is as meddling; so this may be a wash.

Differences...

1. They are recruiting against South Carolina, in state, instead of the perennial #1 recruiting team in the country

2. They play in the soft ACC

3. They got the best of Gus's proteges as their OC, who built their offense to what it is before leaving to be a head coach

4. Wide receivers (they put 3 in the NFL in the past 4 years)

#1 and #2 are HUGE differences. HUGE.

What is Dabo... Offensive or defensive guy? Both units are executing at a top level, just wondering which side he meddles in.

His only job prior to being a head coach was wide receivers, and a brief stint with tight ends early on.

In 2015, the difference was a quarterback and experience.

Also, keep in mind that you're asking this in a season when they are better than they usually are and we are worse than we usually are. We are both experiencing outlier years at the opposite ends of the spectrum. 2015 is not representative of what these two programs really are.

Mcloofus,

I have read that they are very young -- comparable inexperience to us actually. I forgot to mention that point in my original post. I suppose in leagues like the Big 10 (Ohio State last season) and the ACC it is easier to get away with having inexperience/youth up and down the roster than it is the SEC. Clemson has been climbing for longer than just this season while we climb then crash and burn often it seems lol.

Not looking forward to playing against many of the same players that will be playing this Monday night in the season opener next year.

Excellent assessment! You beat me to it.

But you forgot about the lake. Lol.

Can't argue with you there.

Also a great point!

Clemson's campus looks like the 70's version of Auburn's... With a lake. Their mascot looks like they got it from Party City. Their coach is a psychopathic Sabanite. And they're known as of recently as WRU.

Thread/

They finally put together a season without "Clemsonning" and suddenly we have a crisis of comparison on our hands? Yes, they've had a better last few years. But in the span that Dabo has been there (since 2009), they've gone 2-5 against their in-state rival and are just now playing for their first national title.

We've won one and played for two. They've only won a weaker conference twice, same as we have in the murderous SEC. We are 2-5 against our rival also...but ours has won three national titles and is playing for a 4th this year.

Not sure I see the point.

Or the point should be as obvious as you just made it to be.

Lol who said anything about a crisis? Just pointing out these 2 programs look like they could be on equal footing and on the same trajectory when looking at a few of the key similarities. Not to mention they've beaten us the last 2 times we played. Just trying to pinpoint what the differences could be because if you take a look at it we SHOULD be on the same track when you consider the talent and resources that go to each school.

I understand some of Clemson's record's inflation because of their competition but should there really be a difference of EIGHT games won this year and between the 2 teams this season? And yes, as McLoofus said we are comparing 2 opposite ends of spectrums for both teams right now but over the past five years Clemson has won 10, 11, 11, 10, and 14 (+1 possibly) while we have won 8, 3, 12, 8, and 7 games in that same time span. We are averaging 7.6 wins per season compared to their 11.2 over the last 5 years -- which I personally feel is a fair number of years to consider for one's current state of a program. I can see the ACC adding 2 extra wins each year compared to what AU has to face but that still leaves a 2 win difference.

I think it differs year to year. What were we doing in 2010 when Clemson was going 6-7? What was going on when we went 12-2 through the treacherous SEC and Clemson had an inflated 11-2 mark? And yes, I think our record would probably be different if we weren't playing the SEC West year in year out.

And really? You look at the Atlantic Division of the ACC compared to the SEC West and only come up with 2 wins per? FSU, Louisville (2015 only), Boston College, NC State, Wake Forest, and Syracuse is only two games different from Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Arkansas, A&M, and Miss State? And that doesn't even get into the pathetic Coastal Division.

I think they have benefited from having stable QB play with Watson and some better defensive play, but again it's hard to measure when they are playing that schedule.
