From Politico:

The first signs of the slowly unfolding debacle that has meant the decimation of the Democratic Party nationally began early—with the special election of Scott Brown to Ted Kennedy’s empty Senate seat in Massachusetts. That early loss, even though the seat was won back eventually by Elizabeth Warren, presaged the 2010 midterms, which saw the loss of 63 House and six Senate seats. It was disaster that came as no surprise to the White House, but also proved a signal of what was to come.
The party’s record over the past six years has made clear that when Barack Obama leaves office in January 2017 the Democratic Party will have ceded vast sections of the country to Republicans, and will be left with a weak bench of high-level elected officials.
It is, in fact, so bleak a record that even if the Democrats hold the White House and retake the Senate in 2016, the party’s wounds will remain deep and enduring, threatening the enactment of anything like a “progressive” agenda across much of the nation and eliminating nearly a decade’s worth of rising stars who might help strengthen the party in elections ahead...Taken as a whole, these six years have been almost historically awful for Democrats.
You have to go back to the Great Depression and the Watergate years to find so dramatic a reversal of fortunes for a party. And this time, there’s neither a Great Depression nor a criminal conspiracy in the White House to explain what has happened.

Since Barack Obama rode an anti-Bush wave into the White House in 2009, his party has lost nearly 1,000 legislative seats at the federal and state level.

Nice headline but a little misleading ...

Overall, 42 percent over the course of the past year identified as independents, a slight drop from the 43 percent who identified as such in 2014. ... Democrats maintained a small advantage over Republicans — 29 percent to 26 percent .... Meanwhile, the share of self-identified Republicans is just 1 percentage point above its Gallup historical low of 25 percent in 2013, dating back to 1988. In its years of in-person interviews prior to 1988, Gallup had several years in which Republicans polled lower than 25 percent ...

I am NOT comparing Dems and Republicans. I am praising the incredibly high numbers of inedependents.

So why title the topic as you did and bold the sections you did? You did not seem to be emphasizing anything regarding Independents. Just saying ...

Wow Republicans at 25% and still gained over 1000 legislative seats in 6 years. The people must be sending a messages. What could it be?

I think the Republicans also had about a 10+ gain in governors seats.

What do you think the reasons are?

Worth Considering: Historically, the party not in power (White House) always picks up significant chunks of seats in off-year elections. Combine this with lower voter turnout which also always happens in midterm elections and it's actually pretty easy to understand the GOP congressional gains during Obama's Presidency.

Perspective ...

  • Reagan lost GOP seats in '82 and '86 (31 in the House, 8 in the Senate)
  • GHB lost GOP seats in '90 (8 in the House, 1 in the Senate)
  • GWB lost GOP seats in '06 (30 in the House, 6 in the Senate)

Comparison: In 2014, Obama lost 13 in the House and 9 in the Senate.

All I can tell ya is that there are now 35 republican governors and in 30 of those states republicans are the majority of both houses which is a big increase since 2008. Republicans also current majority in both Houses of Congress.

Anyway you slice it, Obama has been GREAT for conservative principles and has overseen an impressive move toward them the last 7 years.

If that's the case, you sure wouldn't know it from reading this board. Doomsday is everyday Obama is in office.

Exactly ;) ... Country must be in wonderful shape with all those conservative principles in command.

Meanwhile, their party has been hijacked. ;D
