5 Reasons Serious TV Debates Are Impossible

Reason number 3. Nail, meet head.

If you're predisposed to think a strongman can solve all our problems because "why, we're Americans. We're the most awesomest people who've ever set foot on this planet, and anyone who might cause more problems is just jealous of our unbelievable awesomeness", tv debates are perfect for you. On the other hand, if you're actually serious, it's probably best to turn off the tube and read a book or spend time with the spouse and/or kiddos.

This is a really good analysis, not only of TV politics but of politics in general. (To use a redundant phrase.)

It's sad and disturbing. It's also consistent with one of my personal theories that technology - for all it's wonderful effects - is a two edged sword, if not a hellbound train.

Thanks for posting the link!

In other words it doesn't matter at all who is elected President..is that it? I wont make my decision based on debate performance but debates are a good medium to see the candidates in the spotlight. On the other hand, the democrat debate does seem contrived and stacked to make their presumptive Queen's coronation all the more likely. SO yeah, I could agree on that front but Im of the opinion the debates serve a worthy purpose if they're not trying to deliver a predetermined outcome.

Geo-political problems are complex. For that matter so are domestic policy issues and neither can be solved in 30 second sound bites but, I still believe the debates serve a purpose that is worthwhile. If for no other reason to get a feel for each candidates respective political perspective relating to THE most important issue facing America at this particular time...illegal immigration because if that conundrum is not solved there wont be an America, as we've known it, in about 30 years. I, for one, have a deep respect for our heritage and the values that have made America the greatest nation history has ever known and want to elect a candidate who shares the same desire to preserve our system of values rather contribute to their continued unraveling.

This is why we can't have reasoned discussions. Every counterpoint must be based on an imagined extreme.

Nice! All of the information in the above post and you pick out one sentence you don't like and then blame him/her for not being able to have reasoned discussions. Please try harder.

You know where all that got started? Believe it or not it was the Communists who were the first to question the motives of the person making an argument rather than trying to discredit the argument. Homie does seem to possess every trait that characterizes a commie.

First sentences - if you have never taken a writing course - are important. This one was like serving a bowl of soup with a roach floating in it.

But I can pick out a few more betting the question statements if you like.

Great. First Bernie Sanders, now me.

Trump has made sure with his carnival barking that a ham fisted, economically ignorant immigration policy is a prerequisite for the GOP nod. You're in the clear.

What good do the TV debates serve when all the candidates agree on every major issue? The only one on the GOP side who strays with his competitors in any meaningful way won't be on the stage after FOX cherry picked polls so they could have the echo chamber they wanted.
