Per Article 2, Section 3 of the US Constitution:

"He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; ..."

That's all it says -- give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union. The spectacle that is the annual SOTU address has become is really hard to take. I stopped watching them back in Reagan's presidency due to the chronic cheer-leading, fake applause, etc. I found an opinion piece by Kevin Williamson that sums up my feelings perfectly:

http://www.nationalreview.com/article/369607/great-caesars-ghost-kevin-d-williamson

The annual State of the Union pageant is a hideous, dispiriting, ugly, monotonous, un-American, un-republican, anti-democratic, dreary, backward, monarchical, retch-inducing, depressing, shameful, crypto-imperial display of official self-aggrandizement and piteous toadying, a black Mass during which every unholy order of teacup totalitarian and cringing courtier gathers under the towering dome of a faux-Roman temple to listen to a speech with no content given by a man with no content, to rise and to be seated as is called for by the order of worship — it is a wonder they have not started genuflecting — with one wretched representative of their number squirreled away in some well-upholstered Washington hidey-hole in order to preserve the illusion that those gathered constitute a special class of humanity without whom we could not live. It’s the most nauseating display in American public life — and I write that as someone who has just returned from a pornographers’ convention. It’s worse than the Oscars. ...

I would very much like to see a prepared written report covering basic issues (e.g. economy, budget, defense, energy, social services, etc.) and what the President wants to make priority.

Thoughts?

I forgot to add: By having the President submit a SOTU report instead of an address, then we could also dispense with the equally insufferable opposition party "SOTU Rebuttals."

I agree...Congress should define a scorecard for the President and force him to report on it. The Prez could add anything on top of that they want to; but at least report the critical metrics...sans the bull****...

"She has come to the conclusion that the Democratic Party has left her," her lawyer, Mat Staver, said Saturday in a statement. "She has decided to switch her voter registration. However, the issue of religious freedom in this case is not a partisan issue. It is neither Republican nor Democrat. It is an inalienable right and what makes America the land of liberty."

Staver said Davis "has been a lifelong Democrat but has received no support from the Democratic Party or leaders."

The party switch was revealed Friday when a Reuters reporter asked whether she'd ever considered switching parties. Davis replied, "I've already done that."

I enjoyed seeing Kim Davis. She looked happy.

I thought Michelle looked hot.

absolutely

I didn't see, but have felt her most unattractive features are her politics.

I could set politics aside for an hour.

Gail Stanwyck: She looks like a hooker. Look at her. Look at her! Could you love someone who looked like that?

Fletch: What are you talking about? Of course not! Five, ten minutes tops, maybe.
