This happened in the building next door to my team in Jakarta. Fortunately they are all safe and were evacuated successfully...they were in place for the duration of the attack.

Wth was the deal this time ? What'd Jakarta do to piss them off ?

Trying to gain relevance with the largest Muslim population in the world.

I'd call it attacking the largest Muslim population in the world.

There's a lesson to be learned here for those who equate radical Islamists to all Muslims in general.

Homer, these radicals are simply playing out how their religions end times is going to happen, according to their Koran. Otherwise, where else do you think they got this idea?

JV Team not so contained after all

Police say IS funded activities of Jakarta group

Indonesian police killed one militant during a raid on Friday (Jan 15) and held three suspects for interrogation in connection with the brazen attack in downtown Jakarta that left seven people dead, including five attackers. Indonesians were shaken but refusing to be cowed a day after co-ordinated attacks in a busy district of central Jakarta that has been claimed by the Islamic State group. Inspector General Tito Karnavian said the attackers had been "neutralised" but were linked to groups across Indonesia and were "part of a global network".

The Islamic State (IS) militant earlier claimed responsibility of the attack. The Islamic State group claimed the attack was carried out by its "soldiers" against citizens from the "crusader coalition", referring to the US-led alliance combating the jihadists. Police chief Colonel Dwiyono, from the Depok area south of the capital, told Indonesia's MetroTV the men were arrested at dawn at their homes while they were sleeping. Three suspected terrorists with alleged links to the terror attacks in Jakarta have been arrested in West Java. Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman, reporting from Jakarta, said many circumstances surrounding the attacks on Thursday remained unclear. National police spokesman Anton Charliyan has told reporters a black IS flag was found at the home of one of the Jakarta attackers and police believe they have established their identities. A Dutch Foreign Ministry spokeswoman in the Netherlands said a Dutch man was seriously injured and was undergoing surgery.

Indonesia has seen attacks by Islamist militants before, but a coordinated assault by a team of suicide bombers and gunmen is unprecedented and had echoes of the sieges seen in Mumbai seven years ago and in Paris last November. " At around 10:50 this morning, a suicide bomb exploded at a cafe at the intersection of Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, followed by two subsequent explosions in the area around the intersection". Those killed included an Indonesian and a Canadian.

"I want to be near the people who died to pray for them", he said, repeating the slogan, "We're not afraid". The United States condemned the attack "in the strongest terms" and said it was committed to its strategic partnership with Indonesia and would stand by it, a U.S. National Security Council spokesman said. The attackers carried handguns, grenades and homemade bombs and struck a Starbucks café and a traffic-police booth in the Indonesian capital's highest-profile attack in six years. He said police seized two bags and some books but they were not analysed right away as it was still dark. 'If they had in mind a Paris-style attack, well then they've failed dismally at that'. "We are in the pursuit of other cells and actors", he said. He said at least one attacker? maybe two? fled afterwards, using a motorbike. "By evening, a large screen atop the building that houses the Starbucks displayed messages that said "#prayforjakarta" and "Indonesia Unite".
