AUBURN - Junior guard Tajh Shamsid-Deen's season is over due to lingering shoulder injuries, Auburn coach Bruce Pearl announced Friday.

This marks the second consecutive season Shamsid-Deen has been shut down early due to shoulder injuries. Last February, he had surgery to repair his left shoulder. One month later, he had the same procedure performed on his right shoulder.

"As difficult as last year was, this has to be even more difficult for him," Pearl said. "Having gone through both shoulder surgeries and react so hard and so well and then to have played so well in the fall after being out all summer rehabbing — the combination of he and Kareem playing together was really exciting — and he never made it to the exhibition season."

Shamsid-Deen has dislocated his right shoulder three times since the preseason. The first came Oct. 27, three days before Auburn's first preseason exhibition versus Brevard College. Shamsid-Deen dislocated it again in the first half of a victory over Northwestern State on Nov. 27. His final dislocation came in the first half of Auburn's blowout loss at then-undefeated and No. 10 Xavier in December.

The injuries limited Shamsid-Deen to only five games this season. He played a total of 58 minutes, scoring 13 points, dishing out eight assists and grabbing six rebounds.

Senior forward Cinmeon Bowers said despite the continual setbacks, Shamsid-Deen has remained upbeat.

"Mentally, he has a good mind right now," Bowers said. "He's staying positive. I'm staying positive with him. He's still working out, keeping his shooting up. He just has to get stronger."

Pearl said Shamsid-Deen is tentatively scheduled to have corrective surgery next week, which will be performed by Dr. James Andrews.

Shamsid-Deen's playing career, Pearl said, likely hinges on the outcome of the procedure.

"How much Dr. Andrews is going to be able to tighten it up will determine whether or not he even plays again," Pearl said, "because we've got to make sure that he's not only healthy to return to play, but also healthy to continue with the rest of his life. It's really difficult."
