New York Values

This pretty much sums it up.

People where I live don't care about New York City one way or the other. We think eight million people living all crammed together is unhealthy and unnatural, but if those people want to live that way, so be it. They like their high tax, big public sector economy, and their rent control and gun control. They're amoral, cosmopolitan, and nonjudgmental; authoritarian and elitist; disconnected and unconcerned with the vast interior of America.

They're different than the rest of us, but we don't really care. You see, we're pretty tolerant in my neck of the woods, even of people we find peculiar, a little off. It's a very big and highly diverse country. We don't want to take away their lifestyle. We just don't want it imposed on us.

So when Ted Cruz starts talking about New York values, we get it. He's not telling the people of New York to change their ways. He's asking them to respect the rest of us.

yes, yes quite right. No one is challenging their right to their political values but most conservatives simply don't share them. It is an extremely liberal city that elected a mayor who never denied his communist beliefs during the Mayoral election cycle. That alone should tell you all you need to know about New York values. Whether the topic is traditional marriage, gun rights, socialist policies of govt interventionism, right to life, pick one - that city falls far to the left on the political spectrum...and that's fine. it what it is.

The funny thing about this issue is what Cruz said wasn't really offensive. Trump made it seem like Cruz was bashing NYC and all it stands for. Here is what was actually said:

At the sixth Republican debate in South Carolina Thursday night, Cruz was asked to explain what he meant when he described Trump as someone who "embodies New York values."

"You know, I think most people know exactly what New York values are," said Cruz, who added that people in New York City are socially liberal. "Not a lot of conservatives come out of Manhattan. I'm just saying."

Trump responded and said Cruz "insulted a lot of people" and went on to defend New York by bringing up the recovery effort after the 9/11 attacks and the sense of unity among New Yorkers.

"We rebuilt downtown Manhattan, and everybody in the world watched and everybody in the world loved New York and loved New Yorkers," Trump said. "And I have to tell you, that was a very insulting statement that Ted made."

Trump didn't dispute was Cruz said, he just made people think that Cruz said something different. Trump is becoming a better and better politician. That's not a compliment.

It's always a bad idea to "take a shot" at a locale. As Alabamian's (I still qualify, having been born there) we should appreciate that.

Otherwise, you are essentially correct about Trump treating it as more that was actually said. I would expect no less of him. Just like I would expect no less of Raptor, (for example).

Putting down the the most populous city in America, literally the World's center for commerce, finance, art, fashion, culinary, entertainment and media, among many others is not smart, any way you phrase it.

Consider, NY is the corporate headquarters of ABC, Alcoa, American Express, Ann Taylor, Associated Press, Bloomberg, Bloomingdale's, Booz and Company, Brooks Brothers, CBS, CIT Group, Cushman and Wakefield, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Etsy, ETrade, Foot Locker, Food Network, Goldman Sachs, HarperCollins, Hess Oil, HBO, JP Morgan Chase, KPMG, Loews Corporation, Macy's Metlife, NBA, NBC, NBC Universal, News Corporation, New York Life, NFL, NHL, Pfizer, Ralph Lauren, Revlon, Saks Fifth Avenue, Simon & Schuster, Tiffany & Co., Time Inc., Time Warner, Verizon and Viacom among many many others.

Simpy put, New York is the United States of America. It's literally the foundation and at the very core of who we are as a country.

So in my opinion, saying you don't like "New York Values" is like saying you really don't like the USA.

I could accuse you of bashing Small Town U.S.A. It would be easy to argue that "New York Values" are the opposite of "small town values." You could easily say that New York is the capital of greed and glitz and glamour and superficiality. It could be said that "New York values" are the complete antithesis to who we are as a country. The dichotomy is interesting.

People like Trump because they need to feel like someone can fix this mess, his answer to everything is a slogan "make America great again" much like Obama and the "Change we can believe in".

It's not about NY ... but these kind of comments kill him in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Las Vegas, Reno, South Florida, Orlando, Tampa, Richmond, etc. Small town America is great but the population is in the big cities and in the purple states, these remark will hit, bank on it.

Cruz wins the Deep South ... so what?

I don't think Cincinnati gets offended about criticizing NY values. Neither does Reno. Or Vegas, etc. Why do you think that? Besides, this is a statement made in January to win primaries. Outside of NY, it will be largely forgotten by fall.

My point is those in the bigger cities relate to the New Yorks of the world. Simply put, I don't think pitting small towns vs big cities is a winning platform. Regardless, you're right, it won't matter in the fall because Cruz won't be anywhere to be found.
