The financial penalty Auburn expected has officially been levied: Auburn will be forced to pay $100,000 to the SEC because its fans stormed the court after upsetting No. 14 Kentucky last week.

This is Auburn's second offense dating back to 2004, when the SEC instituted a fine structure (and later upgraded it) for fans storming fields of competition. Auburn famously stormed the field following its Kick Six victory against Alabama in the 2013 Iron Bowl.

"The Conference has unanimously approved a policy requiring fines be applied when spectators enter the playing court after a game," SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. "While understanding the enthusiasm following an exciting victory, fans need to remain in the stands and avoid the safety concerns associated with rushing on to the playing floor. We want to have exciting experiences around SEC games, but also want to maintain a safe environment for student-athletes, coaches, spectators and officials."

...

Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs told AL.com no one was hurt during the celebration and said the school will happily pay the fine.

"I supported the more expensive fine structure, like we all did, just to try to protect ourselves and the students and athletes," Jacobs said. "It's certainly a great win. The fine will not take anything from that."

Worth it. War Eagle

OK....hope you sent in your contribution. Maybe it's just me but would rather spend the money on nicer restrooms in the football stadium.

Yep

This has to be one of the dumbest rules of stupidity that I have ever seen. Do they do this when a team wins a big football rivalry game? Those that made this rule should be fined $100,000.00 for coming up with this stupid rule. Pretty soon, teams will be fined for clapping too loud when their team has a great play.

I disagree. This rule needs to be in place and its my opinion that fans belong in the stands. Rushing the court serves no purpose. They can celebrate everything from their seats. Spectators don't belong on the playing surface of any sport. All it takes is one person acting like a total idiot and things can get really ugly in a hurry. It's the only reason Calipari sent his players to the locker room, because he knew that was likely to happen in spite of the plea from the PA announcer to stay off the floor. Fans just have no business on the playing surface, IMO. Unfortunately the fine won't really matter because its not going to deter those people from doing it, because its not coming out of their pocket.

I am surprised they levied the fine so quickly though. I expected it to happen after the season was over.

the way to prevent it is to announce (maybe put on the ticket itself) that if you go on the court unauthorized, then you may solely have responsibility to pay any and all fines.

Let one of the drunk kids pay the $100,000 :)

just guessing nobody would agree with my idea ...

Disagree, big win celebrations has always been a part of NCAA athletics, executing a safer way to do it by the Universities and the NCAA would be the ideal solution. In reality, the injuries are very minimal and it isn't that hard to put on the back of the ticket that any entrance onto the field of play will by ticket holder will be responsible for any and all actions. Opening an area to allow fans out would help the flow and fans that are not interested can get out of the way. These celebrations are forever remembered by the fan base, they are gonna happen, why not be pro active and attempt to organize the celebration and clear liability in the ticket sale.

I agree with the sentiment as some shoes can damage the floor and there is a safety concern. However it is unrealistic to expect fans to adhere to this type of rule when certain types of wins occur like the the kick 6. Emotions overcome reason even among normal adults then you add that most of the ones rushing on are 18-22 years old it will happen in some circumstances. I only hope that the fine goes to a good use not into the coffers of the SEC

I agree with the rule but IMO the fine amount is excessive. Happy college fans bleeding onto their own basketball court after a win is not on the same planet as tearing down goalposts & tearing up sod. And what, Auburn with our parade of epic wins chronically violates this rule in basketball? AU can foot the bill, sure, but this amount is a killer for smaller colleges - if this fine precedent is administered across the board for similar acts.

Actually it is a pretty rare event...perhaps to become even rarer when the fines are levied.

Agree with War Tiger....there is no need for home fans to come into contact with players from an opposing team after an emotional game. AU has an outlet for exuberant fans.....rolling Toomer's Corner...

I say tell the SEC to get bent....what are they gonna do? Kick us out? We could join the ACC and win the football conference title 2 out of 3 years.

I believe it is an SEC fine not an NCAA, the NCAA supports celebrations, it makes ESPN every time it happens.

I don't follow bball that closely unless they are winning. I thought it was silly to storm the court. I know it was UK, but they were ranked 14th and lower now. Just not storming the floor worthy to me. However, to the loyal bball fans it was probably worth it.

100k. Wow. We vould have bought several football players with that. :)

I keed. I keed.

storming the field after beating UAT on a 1 second 109 yard run back is a once in a century event and is understandable

storming the court during a regular season SEC basketball game is not something we should be doing. we need to act like we've been there done that and will be there again.

But to be fair we haven't been there in over a decade and a half. A portion of the student body was wearing diapers the last time we beat UK who is the long time king of the SEC. It only took BP 1.5 years. It was a huge moment and while not a once in a century moment the visuals of the floor being covered in students is positive one and the players looked like they enjoyed it too which is big for them in starting to believe big time wins can be achieved at AU.

The only thing I regret about the whole thing is Tony Barbee's coward *** not being there to witness it in person.

Um, except they haven't been there in a long, long time.

Storming the court is part of college basketball, like it or not. If they want to stop it, they will have to erect a fence.
